I guess its time to blush on my side. During the bisection for the
commit that introduced the problem I came to the point where it was
clear to me that it was already in 4.16. This was a while back I have
have honestly no idea how I did this mistake.
I tested again now with plain 4.16 and it works fine.
The fix is also in 4.17-rcX where it actually is needed. In the end I am
glad that it was not introduced and slipped me in an earlier release.

No backport needed. I simply screwed up when verifying this for 4.16.

This series mends some problems in headroom management in ip6_gre
module. The current code base has the following three closely-related
problems:
- ip6gretap tunnels neglect to ensure there's enough writable headroom
before pushing GRE headers.
- ip6erspan does this, but assumes that dev->needed_headroom is primed.
But that doesn't happen until ip6_tnl_xmit() is called later. Thus for
the first packet, ip6erspan actually behaves like ip6gretap above.
- ip6erspan shares some of the code with ip6gretap, including
calculations of needed header length. While there is custom
ERSPAN-specific code for calculating the headroom, the computed
values are overwritten by the ip6gretap code.
The first two issues lead to a kernel panic in situations where a packet
is mirrored from a veth device to the device in question. They are
fixed, respectively, in patches #1 and #2, which include the full panic
trace and a reproducer.
The rest of the patchset deals with the last issue. In patches #3 to #6,
several functions are split up into reusable parts. Finally in patch #7
these blocks are used to compose ERSPAN-specific callbacks where
necessary to fix the hlen calculation.

The function ip6gre_tnl_link_config() is used for setting up
configuration of both ip6gretap and ip6erspan tunnels. Split the
function into the common part and the route-lookup part. The latter then
takes the calculated header length as an argument. This split will allow
the patches down the line to sneak in a custom header length computation
for the ERSPAN tunnel.

Extract from ip6gre_newlink() a reusable function
ip6gre_newlink_common(). The ip6gre_tnl_link_config() call needs to be
made customizable for ERSPAN, thus reorder it with calls to
ip6_tnl_change_mtu() and dev_hold(), and extract the whole tail to the
caller, ip6gre_newlink(). Thus enable an ERSPAN-specific _newlink()
function without a lot of duplicity.

Even though ip6erspan_tap_init() sets up hlen and tun_hlen according to
what ERSPAN needs, it goes ahead to call ip6gre_tnl_link_config() which
overwrites these settings with GRE-specific ones.
Similarly for changelink callbacks, which are handled by
ip6gre_changelink() calls ip6gre_tnl_change() calls
ip6gre_tnl_link_config() as well.
The difference ends up being 12 vs. 20 bytes, and this is generally not
a problem, because a 12-byte request likely ends up allocating more and
the extra 8 bytes are thus available. However correct it is not.
So replace the newlink and changelink callbacks with an ERSPAN-specific
ones, reusing the newly-introduced _common() functions.

Nope.
It follows a pattern seen with I2C and SPI subsystem. A bus driver
provides a bus to Linux. But i2c and SPI, unlike PCI or USB, you
cannot enumerate the devices on the bus, you need to know what devices
are there. So the board file registers an info structure, listing what
devices are on the bus. When the bus pops into existence, the core
links the bus to the info structure about devices on the bus and then
probes the devices.
The same is happening here. The fixed_phy driver provides an MDIO bus.
The info structure in dsa-loop-bdinfo says there is an dsa-loop device
at address 31 on that bus.
Combine the two causes the dsa-loop device to actually probe.

It matches what CONFIG_FIXED_PHY is, so if it's built-in it also becomes
built-in, if is modular, it is also modular, this was fixed with
40013ff20b1beed31184935fc0aea6a859d4d4ef ("net: dsa: Fix functional
dsa-loop dependency on FIXED_PHY")

There is a caveat that if you have everything modular, if you loaded
fixed_phy first, and forgot to load dsa-loop-bdinfo, then nothing will
happen because the MDIO bus was created and there were no matching devices.

While we can support forcing the speed/duplex through ethtool, there
is no obvious facility via ethtool to set the protocol currently (eg,
SGMII vs 1000base-X). There is, however, the possibility to use the
advertise mask to determine which mode we should be using, but that's
awkward to deal with via ethtool as ethtool wants a hex mask, which
really isn't user friendly.
The protocol matters - for example, a copper SFP module will typically
want to use SGMII, and if it encounters 1000base-X on the other side,
the PHY won't pass data because it will believe that the link to the
MAC is down.

Determining the protocol is kind of guess work even with the EEPROM
available - see comments above sfp_parse_interface().
Without knowing the contents of the EEPROM, you can't even guess what
protocol should be used for a particular module.
For example, there are 10/100/1000 modules from one vendor that use an
88e1111, which are configured for SGMII on the MAC side. There is
another variant of that module which has the same hardware, but the
88e1111 is programmed for 1G only mode, and uses 1000base-X on the MAC
side. For both modules, the 88e1111 is accessible, the host side
protocol can be reconfigured and the manufacturer includes the 88e1111
register access instructions for doing so.

Is there a particular motivation for the cap of 127? IMHO 127 ACKs is quite
a few to compress. Experience seems to show that it works well to have one
GRO ACK for ~64KBytes that triggers a single TSO skb of ~64KBytes. It might
be nice to try to match those dynamics in this SACK compression case, so it
might be nice to cap the number of compressed ACKs at something like 44?
(0xffff / 1448 - 1). That way for high-speed paths we could try to keep
the ACK clock going with ACKs for ~64KBytes that trigger a single TSO skb
of ~64KBytes, no matter whether we are sending SACKs or cumulative ACKs.

Any particular motivation for the 2.5ms here? It might be nice to match the
existing TSO autosizing dynamics and use 1ms here instead of having a
separate new constant of 2.5ms. Smaller time scales here should lead to
less burstiness and queue pressure from data packets in the network, and we
know from experience that the CPU overhead of 1ms chunks is acceptable.

I like the introspection output it provides in 7/7, it's really great!
So the query interface would only ever be tied to BPF progs whose attach
life time is tied to the life time of the application and as soon as all
refs on the fd are released it's unloaded from the system. BPF_TASK_FD_QUERY
seems okay to me, or something like BPF_ATTACH_QUERY. Even if the name is
slightly more generic, it might be more fitting with other cmds like
BPF_PROG_QUERY we have where we tell an attach point to retrieve all progs
from it (though only tied to cgroups right now, it may not be in future).
For all the others that are not strictly tied to the task but global, bpftool
would then need to be extended to query the various other interfaces like
netlink for retrieval which is on todo for some point in future as well. So
this set nicely complements this introspection aspect.

Applied to bpf-next, thanks Quentin! Btw in the current uapi description
some of the helpers have a new line before 'Return' and most have not. I
presume it doesn't really matter though we might want to do a one-time
cleanup on these cases at some point in time.

127 was chosen because the field is u8, and since skb allocation for the ACK
can fail, we could have cases were the field goes above 127.
Ultimately, I believe a followup patch would add a sysctl, so that we can fine-tune
this, and eventually disable ACK compression if this sysctl is set to 0

This came from my tests on wifi really :)
I also had the idea to make this threshold adjustable for wifi, like we did for sk_pacing_shift.
(On wifi, we might want to increase the max delay between ACK)
So maybe use 1ms delay, when sk_pacing_shift == 10, but increase it if sk_pacing_shift has been lowered.

Other ethernet drivers default to N. There is no reason for Microsemi
to default to y. I believe Linus has set the bar at a feature that cures
cancer can be enabled by default. [1]
