Are you sure your default POLICIES are ok? I mean...
do you have somewhere:
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -P FORWARD DROP
iptables -P OUTPUT DROP
... your script ...
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

You should also consider adding rules for the DNS to work.
