Subject: [bug report] fs/ntfs3: mounting an ntfs filesystem accelerated by intel optane memory causes data corruption
Date: Sat, 2 May 2026 23:10:46 +0800	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <76bc95e8-c758-4934-a68f-bb11e20b0d84@gmail.com> (raw)

Hello Konstantin Komarov,

If an NTFS filesystem is set to be accelerated using Intel Optane Memory on
Windows using the Intel Optane Memory and Storage Management app, mounting that
filesystem on Linux will cause some files to be unreadable, presumably because
the data for those files are stored on the Intel Optane SSD. This may be proven
by the fact that cloning the NTFS drive in question to another drive causes
Windows' chkdsk to report that drive as corrupted, while the original drive is
perfectly readable. Writing the the NTFS drive in this state may cause data
corruption.

Listing the directories that contain unreadable files gives errors like "invalid
argument" or "no such file or directory", and dmesg gives errors like "ntfs3:
...: MFT: r=..., expect seq=... instead of ...!".

Would it be possible to detect this case and prevent mounting the drive in this
inconsistent state?

This is my first time reporting a kernel issue. Sorry if I have made a mistake.

Kernel version: 6.18.25
Distro: Gentoo
