Assuming your tree looks something like this [partial]:
meta-giuseppe:
recipes:
some-recipe:
some-recipe_1.2.3.bbappend
files:
myfile.tar.gz
Try using this instead
FILESEXTRAPATHS_prepend := "${THISDIR}/files:"
