Bug ID: 219904
Summary: pc speaker not working (just pop's/click's) on intel
chipsets gen 6, 7 and probably more
Product: Drivers
Version: 2.5
Hardware: Intel
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: Platform_x86
Assignee: drivers_platform_x86@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
Reporter: tobias.diendorfer@gmail.com
Regression: No
The internal pc speaker just pop's/click's when ill try to play sound, with ex.
beep command. It does'nt matter which frequency or duration, the issue is
always here.
* The pcspkr module is loaded.
* The issue occurs on Unraid v7+ (slackware with kernel 6.6.78) and also
ubuntu 24.04.
* The issue is also present in windows.
The issue goes away when you put the device to standby and wake it from
standby.
That's really weird!
Here are some links:
https://forums.unraid.net/topic/168324-biosinternal-speaker-issues-clicking-rather-than-beeping/
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/10jg9ip/pc_speaker_makes_clicking_sound_instead_of_beep/?embed_host_url=https://forums.unraid.net/index.php
Affected (confirmed) boards are:
* Asus PRIME B760M-A D4-CSM
* Gigabyte H610I
* ASRock B660
So affected chipsets seems gen 6, 7 and probably more.

This could mean a HW issue (a buggy BIOS maybe).

Yes could be, but than it would affect multiple vendors/boards/bioses.
I think the base BIOS is from Intel, right?

I have posted on my MoBo's support page: https://esupport.gigabyte.com/
Ticket is: #1818413
Just in case someone of you would also contact them.
Let's see if they contact intel about the issue or we have directly contact
them?
The chances are higher when an mobo manufacture does it.
@all of you with the same issue, please raise tickets to your mobo vendor so
the issue get's attention.
thx

Hey everyone!
Good news, there's progress, at least on the ASUS side.
I reported this issue to their technical support, and in just a couple of weeks
they sent me two test BIOS versions for the motherboards I had mentioned in my
report, one with an Intel 6xx chipset and the other with an Intel 7xx. I've
tested both, and they work perfectly, the PC speaker is finally functioning
again! I'm genuinely impressed with ASUS's responsiveness and the quality of
their support.
Let's hope this fix will be included in official BIOS updates for all affected
motherboards.
Also, a quick note for anyone planning to contact their vendor (ASUS, GIGABYTE,
or others), when reporting an issue, be as detailed and precise as possible,
and make sure to fill in every required field in the support form. If the
manufacturer's support team is as professional as ASUS has been in this case,
they'll take your report seriously and act on it.

@KeyofBlueS my first ticket to gigabyte #1818413 was just receiving an standard
answer...
Since there is only one comment about the issue on Reddit without any other
information, please provide more info(screenshot or video) about the issue.
Please also clear CMOS, install latest BIOS, install another SSD with no data
stored, install OS, APP Center, drivers, and check again.
... had not time to test any further so i went with the workaround (after boot
trigger standby and wakup in 5 seconds :-) )
But after i read your post, i am not giving up on this.
Have created an new ticket on gigabyte eSupport platform with link to your
comment.
Hope they take this now serious and just trying to reproduce the issue!
Otherwise i will go the ASUS route for my next system (NAS, PC, ...)
Will keep you updated.

Hey!
Yeah, that's a pretty standard first-level support reply, but they usually need
to collect a minimal set of info before escalating the case to the technical
team.
It's definitely worth following their instructions so the issue doesn't get
stuck at the front line.
Make sure to give them as much detail as possible, for example:
- Confirm you're on the latest BIOS version, with default settings.
- Mention that you've also tested with a fresh OS installation, both Windows
and Linux if possible, to rule out any software involvement.
- Describe the steps to reproduce the problem clearly.
- Provide any other information they ask for, even if it seems unrelated.
Providing all this info helps them check all the boxes they need before the
report can be passed along to the BIOS or chipset engineers.
Once they have a clean, reproducible test case, they'll hopefully take it
seriously, that's exactly how ASUS is handling it.
So yeah, don't give up! Give them what they ask, and it'll maximize the chances
that Gigabyte's (or any other vendor’s) tech team can reproduce and address it
properly.

I flashed it and the issue is the same.

The gigabyte support is so frustrating!
First, you have to wait a month and now an nonsense answer:
******************************************************
Dear customer,
Thank you for emailing GIGABYTE.
We would like to help you on this Case.
Sorry our BIOS team could not provide BIOS with this fix due to we could not
support LInux
Regards
GIGABYTE Team
******************************************************
I will open a new ticket and refer to the old ones and also make them public
here: 1818413 & 1935079
Hope someone, with the same issue, will throw the support id numbers back at
them :-) I will do and add:
The issue is also present on windows!

Wow, that's amazing. Thanks a lot.
My Asus report from support was that they will send it to team or similar
without any future answer.
So we have last bios for Asus PRIME B760M-A D4-CSM that I still not updated.
I understand that fixed bios still not released?

Not yet, the fixed BIOS hasn't been officially released.
ASUS provided me with test BIOS versions for my two specific motherboards (the
ones I reported to them, ROG STRIX Z790-F GAMING WIFI and ROG STRIX B660-F
GAMING WIFI), and those do fix the issue.
Now we just have to wait for them to publish updated BIOS releases officially
for those models, if not for all affected models. Hopefully it won't take long,
since the fix is already confirmed working.

ASUS has recently released new official BIOS versions:
- ROG STRIX Z790-F GAMING WIFI - BIOS 3107 (2025/12/15)
- ROG STRIX B660-F GAMING WIFI - BIOS 3811 (2025/11/21)
Unfortunately, after installing these updates on both motherboards, I can
confirm that the beeper issue is still present and behaves exactly as before.
The fix works correctly only with the test BIOS versions that ASUS previously
provided to me through technical support.
I've already informed my ASUS contact and asked them to pass this information
to the technical team, in case the fix has not yet been fully merged into the
official BIOS releases.
I'll keep the community updated as soon as there are any further developments.
Thanks to everyone for the continued feedback and collaboration.

Good news, the issue is now officially resolved by ASUS.
ASUS released new BIOS versions for the motherboards I had reported to them:
- ROG STRIX Z790-F GAMING WIFI: BIOS 3201
- ROG STRIX B660-F GAMING WIFI: BIOS 4001
ASUS support clarified that the feature is present but not enabled by default.
To make the PC Speaker work correctly, you need to enable the following option
in the BIOS:
"BIOS" > "Advanced Mode" > "Advanced" > "Onboard Devices Configuration" > "8254
timer clock in OS"
After enabling this option on the Z790-F with BIOS 3201, I can confirm that the
PC Speaker works correctly again.
Unfortunately, I cannot test the B660-F at the moment, but since the same
change was reported for its BIOS as well, it should behave the same.
It's currently not clear whether this fix will be released for other
motherboards too. If you are affected, it's worth checking whether a BIOS
update is available for your motherboard and then looking in the BIOS for the
option "8254 timer clock in OS" (or something similar).
If you can't find it, I recommend contacting your motherboard vendor's support
and mentioning the issue, as well as the fact that ASUS solved it by
introducing this BIOS option. That may help them reproduce the fix on their
side.
Huge thanks to ASUS support and their technical team for actually investigating
the issue and implementing a fix. The support experience was genuinely
impressive.
