[Qemu-devel] Qemu fails to run Acad

  Qemu fails to run Autocad on dos (autocad release 10, dating of 1988,
on DOS 6.22 : the program starts OK, but when a drawing is open and the
GUI tries to starts the program just stops while displaying the menus.
There is no error message, no complain, but the program just stops. I
thing this is because autocad plays a bit with the graphical memory, but
my knowledge of such things is very limited.

  Anyway, if it can help inproving qemu, there is a disk image with dos 
and acad at http://www.eleves.ens.fr/home/varoquau/diskim.gz .

  Qemu fails to run Autocad on dos (autocad release 10, dating of 1988,

running for ever (35mn so far) without any change on hte screen. I thing
this is because autocad plays a bit with the graphical memory, but my
knowledge of such things is very limited.

Sorry, please remove this link. Most qemu users and developers do not have DOS 
and ACAD licences. Why not send a full debug output in GDB?

To my knowledge, MS Dos 6.2.2 costs approximatively  $19 per license.

Even if I have not used MS products for years now, I am quite sure MS Dos 
6.2.2 is not offered for free. Autocad on DOS is not free too. Or can you say 
the converse?

Please understand that the developers and users from Qemu cannot be accused of 
being pirates. We respect copyright and authors like all free software 
authors and developers.

Some older versions are freely available, AFAIK.
But I don't know if you can run autocad with those ones.

I don't think you have any authority to say or do sthg like this. You
can ask for the message to be deleted from the lis but what, who gives
you a mandat to denonciate this this way ?
I don't say that it was a good idea to make this disk image available,
but the goal has never be, IMHO, to steal anything. It's a mistake, so
you're right to say it, to claim that this kind of thing shouldn't
happen, and to give advices to solve the problem.
And what the hell is a school concerned with this ? Really a stupid
idea...
Sorry for you it's what you want to be, but you aren't representing any
authority here, so keep calm, do what you have to do and please don't
try to play cops and thieves game here.

I won't debate more, just wanted to give my opinion, as you asked for...

It is definately our duty to advise people not to illegally distribute
software in this way.  However, if it were me, I wouldn't be ratting
them out to the authorities.  Perhaps notifing their provider (the
school, etc) that illegal activity is happening would suffice, but only
in the bad cases.  DOS with an ancient version of autocad... not a
terrible case, given the depreciated value of the software.  However,
still illegal and should be taken into account whenever people doing
this attempt to contribute in the future.
