I saw on the OS support page
(http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/ossupport.html) that Windows XP is
nearly unknown...
I just installed the last version (0.6.2 from CVS with the kqemu
module), and tested Windows XP to see how it works.
After a long install (about 2H30, kqemu module loaded), Windows XP (Pro
SP2) started fine.
Windows XP is fully working.
(I ran also some tests about the accelerator module :
with kqemu module :
startup : 3:00
windows media player startup : 0:14
without kqemu module
startup : 4:30
windows media player startup : 0:38)

Well, I tried this just on the weekend with the latest cvs code and
Windows XP Pro SP2 _German_ and it still reboots for me in an endless
loop after the second installation stage is over.
I reported this problem earlier [1].
The commandline I used is
$QEMU -L /usr/local/share/qemu/ -hda xp.img -m 256 -user-net -enable-audio -localtime
I'm running under sarge/kernel 2.6 on a smp system if thats of any help.

I had the WinXP problem mentioned in the Documentation (some kind of
Authentication error) with german XP Prof. An english version
works both with qemu and kqemu.
The error in the german version has gone now for both versions; it
boots fine and SP2 installed flawlessly; even Windows Update works.
So thanks, Fabrice and folks! A german XP Home also installed, but I
didn't try to get into this further.
One smaller problem: I'm using Gnome and thus esd for sound output. I
can get no output while esd is running. If I'm trying the fmod
library, there is some sound, but it is garbled. Has anybody tried to
get sound using esd work?
Greetings,
Heike

Well, I must correct me - I'm trying to install SP1 .
Booting in 'Safe Mode' as recommended in the Docs brings me over the
login screen. But immediately after explorer.exe crashs.

Just wondering: Have you tried esddsp qemu -hda ... ?
It works (or used to) quite well for rdesktop, for instance.

This doesnt seem to work with the default OSS sound driver. You'll probably have
to use the SDL audio driver to make this work.

Yes, that's been my idea too when I had a closer look at the problem.
The qemu configure script however enables OSS for Linux hosts.
I include a (very small) simple patch to add a --disable-oss option to
configure. Also, libsdl in a version matching the sound daemon (esd
for GNOME, aRts for KDE) must have been installed. This works for
small sound samples like the Windows and GNOME system sounds. I'm
getting dropouts with samples longer than a few seconds. YMMV.

It also enables SDL for Linux hosts. OSS is the default, but you can tell
qemu to prefer SDL by setting the environment variable QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=sdl
(you can set it to use fmod, etc by this manner as well).

The patch isn't needed. This should be chosen at run time.

Version of SDL shouldn't matter, afaik. I'm using SDL 1.2.7 if that helps.
The sound daemon one uses isn't really dependent on which GUI environment you
use (for example I have both esd and artsd, but others may use yasd, NAS, etc).
I actually use both artsd and esd. (I use artsdsp esd to do this tricky, in
order to run both ESD and Arts programs.)

Works fine. Thanks.
