[Qemu-devel] no start on amd64 (was "Nothing happens")

Should a qemu backtrace be 411 lines long?
Actually, when I start qemu 0.7.1 (kqemu enabled, but makes no difference),
it doesn't do anything. I hit CTRL-C to get a backtrace of the situation.
Qemu has never worked on this setup, and the problem has always been the
same.
Any ideas?

Hi,

actually it looks more like the program was compiled with
"-fomit-frame-pointer". For that reason, you only get correct names (and
EIPs) for library calls.

Since QEmu uses as many physical registers as it can get, it is sensible
to omit the frame pointer, because it has no meaning anyway once you are
in translated code.

However, in your case I think it is more an SDL problem. Are you sure that
the video mode you are trying to set is supported on your system? Could
also be some sort of XShm hickup.

Unless you overrode the default, qemu is compiled with optimization. In this 
case gcc and gdb will do their best, but it's normal for the debug 
information to be inaccurate. In particular there's no requirement that the 
compiler create a full stack frame, so you're relying on being able to track 
where the compiler happens to put things. Different toolchain versions are 
able to do this with different levels of accuracy.

If you're backtracing through dynamically generated code that will almost 
certainly confuse the debugger.

Once you hit a frame that gdb doesn't know about [???] all bets are off, and 
the rest of the backtrace is most likely random garbage.

Do you have other programs running, which use SDL? Sorry, the configure
output does not help here.

That's right. It hangs in a select() when waiting for writable buffers.
That can mean a whole lot of anything. I doubt that you'll find out,
unless you're writing a small test program yourself, just initializing
SDL.

Looks like there really is an SDL problem. I'm not capable of writing a test
program, but I tried sdlroids. It hangs in status S+ right after starting
it.
After I found out about this, I rebuilt libsdl (Gentoo package), but it
didn't help.
What's next?

You try to find somebody with gentoo and amd64 who successfully ran an SDL
program. Or you could bug somebody to write a simple SDL example. But
surely, some simple examples are included with libsdl, right?

Perhaps you need to install a separate SDL development package to get 
the needed static libraries? I remember that being the solution to 
some Gentoo SDL problems which were discussed on this list in the 
past.

I've been using Qemu on an amd64 Gentoo Linux for more than a year.
Don't have any troubles with SDL.

Just tried the latest qemu portage (0.7.1) with qemu-system-ppc &
qemu-system-x86_64: Linux boots.
I tried:
/usr/bin/qemu -enable-audio -hda /mnt/local/hdc/part2/Disk
-cdrom /mnt/local/hdc/part1/Linux/Mandrake/cooker/MandrakeSecurity-MNF.i586.iso -boot d
* with & without -enable-audio
* with & without -serial stdio
* with & without -M pc (-M mac99 for PowerPC emulation)
* using qemu-system-x86_64 instead of qemu
* using qemu-system-ppc instead of qemu (with another cd image...)

Fyi, my installed SDL version is 1.2.8-r1.

The only thing I did not test is loadvm: I got no saved vm to load...
Did you try without the loadvm option ?
