This is known, and easy to fix. Just no one has bothered I think.
There was an on-quit patch a while ago, that let you specify the behavior
you wanted when quiting (including the ability to run a custom script that would
tell the guest OS to shut itself down) but that was never committed.

There's a buglet in qemu in that, if you close the window, it will just
exit. It would be really useful if it warned you not to do this, but to
shut down the virtual machine first. Like most applications do to
prevent dataloss without saving first.
