I succesfully installed Windows XP Pro PL (without SP1 I think but I must
check that to be sure) from my university (free for students for edu
uses) before -pci and -cirrusvga options were introduced. It was some CVS
version after 0.5.5 I think. Win was working stable and I had run some
programs on it.

After -pci and -cirrusvga options have been introduced I tried second time
(fresh install). And QEMU got SIGSEGV in the later part of installation
(after two reebots and after entering settings if I remember). I do not
know where excacly the crash happened because I was far away from
computer. But it was not some OOM killer or something like that. And my
hardware is rock stable. It was probably 2.6.6-mm4 kernel without any
closed source modules (stable for me). I posted all info I have about this
try to the list.

I do not know how to debug such problems (I never used gdb and currently
have not time to read the whole manual - if some good manual exists). So I
can try again I somebody will tell me what should I type in order to get
some usefull stack trace.

Thanks,

Hi,

It seems that few people had succsess stories while installing XP while
other had various crashes (in guest OS)...

To those who had those problems, could you please try to describe in
much details the problems?

What I would like to know:

* Which Windows XP version is it (MSDN, XP Volume CD, OEM, Home, Pro, etc)
* If you managed to install XP, have you managed to run the wordpad
program? (the "word processor" which is included in XP).
* Where exactly did the crash happend
* Did you create users? if so, how many?

I understood that using the -pci or -pci -cirrusvga parameters makes any
XP installation crashes. Does it happend to you if you install XP from
scratch?

Thanks,
Hetz

It just segfaults, leaving a hefty 100-200 MB core file in its wake.
Running said core through gdb invariably gives a 'cannot access memory
at 0x$foo' error. Since I don't know gdb too well, and since the only
manual is in GNU info format, which I abhor (replacing man pages? What
was RMS smoking / sniffing / injecting? Er, never mind. I don't want to
know), I doubt that I'll be able to provide any more information than
that.

XP Pro.

Not yet.

Various places, mostly after the "Installing drivers" stage.

Never got the chance to do so.

Again, I haven't been able to successfully install with any options in
order to make a comparison.

Unix is user friendly. However, it isn't idiot friendly.
