Hi,

Darwin 7.01 x86 should work better now. In order to make it work, PCI
IDE DMA was added, but it is kept disabled in the BIOS so that most OSes
won't use it as it is not considered as stable yet.

Fabrice.

Wonderful. Magic. The installation of Darwin 7.01 worked like a charm. An
image is being uploaded to http://www.poure.com/qemu. It will be available
Sunday morning.

A question about MacOsX 10.2 support, which is based on:
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/images/darwinppc-602.cdr.gz

On startup of darwinppc-602.cdr, the error message is exactly
the same as when starting MacOsX 10.2:

http://www.poure.com/screenshots/qemu_temp_9.png

MacOsX is just a graphical layer on top of Darwin. Do you think that there are
chances to install DarwinPPC-602 soon?

Cheers,
Jean-Michel Pouré

Try to start up Mac OS X/Darwin using the -v (verbose) option. You'll
have more informations about the kernel panic.

Hi Jean-Micel,

Would you mind telling me which qemu cvs version you
are using, which darwin cdrom image, and which options
you are specifying that allowed you to run darwin x86
? Currently when I attempt to run, it just hangs
displaying an "apple...."

Thank you kindly,

Brad Watson

Dear Brad,

- Qemu CVS version head from today 26/06/2004 (this morning French time). I
did not upgrade to the latest changes committed afterwards.

- The CD-ROM installers from Darwin can be fetched from:
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/

I downloaded and installed:
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/images/darwin-701.iso.gz

- Then I booted the Darwin guest:
qemu -cdrom darwin-701.iso -hda hd.img -m 128 -boot d -cirrusvga -user-net

According to the Darwin howto, networking under x86 only works with precise
3Com network card (from memory, I did not check again). Therefore, it is
likely that networking cannot work in the guest. This limitation does not
exist in the PPC versions.

MacOsX is entirely based on free software: achieving to run Darwin-701 PPC or
Darwin-6.02 PPC in qemu-system-ppc should bring MacOsX 10.3 and MacOsX 10.2
respectively. The PPC images can be fetched from:

- Darwin-7.01 for PPC (a bug in the PPC bios prevents the iso from booting
according to Jocelyn.):
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/images/darwin-701.iso.gz

- Darwin-6.02 for PPC:
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/images/darwinppc-602.cdr.gz

Kindest regards,
Jean-Michel

Dear Pierre,

I only have a MacOsX 10.2 unused license, I cannot test MacOsX 10.3.

When loading Darwin 6.02 PPC or MacOs10.2, I do not come to a point where a
text prompt is displayed. The only messages are:

In qemu shell:

Mac OS X Loader
Opening partition [/pci@f2000000/mac-io@e/ata-4@1f000/disk@0/disk@0:1]...
HFSInitPartition: 1f0014
Loading HFS+ file: [\\mach_kernel] from 1f0014.
Loading HFS+ file: [\mach_kernel] from 1f0014.
LoadDrivers: Loading from [/pci@f2000000/mac-io@e/ata-4@1f000/disk@0/disk@0:1,
\System\Library\Extensions.mkext]
Loading HFS+ file: [\System\Library\Extensions.mkext] from 1f0014.

Screenshots:
http://www.poure.com/screenshots/qemu_temp_14.png
http://www.poure.com/screenshots/qemu_temp_13.png

On the first screenshot, we can notice the following message:
"ide1:drive0:CDROM
no ISO9660 signature"

Just a guess: could to be a similar problem to the bug of Darwin 7.02 PPC
CDROM not being recognized.

Kindest regards,
Jean-Michel
