Juergen: many thanks :)

To the ml:
I also plan to ask both www.sunfreeware.com and SUNW\'s Companion CD department.
It would help Solaris to compete against VMware.

General Introduction to QEMU

http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~mbeinsx/

QEMU is a FAST! processor emulator using dynamic translation to achieve good emulation speed.

QEMU has two operating modes:

1. Full system emulation. In this mode, QEMU emulates a full system (for example a PC), including a processor and various peripherials. It can be used to launch different Operating Systems without rebooting the PC or to debug system code.

2. User mode emulation (Linux host only). In this mode, QEMU can launch Linux processes compiled for one CPU on another CPU. It can be used to launch the Wine Windows API emulator (http://www.winehq.org) or to ease cross-compilation and cross-debugging.

As QEMU requires no host kernel driver to run, it is very safe and easy to use.

For system emulation, the following hardware targets are supported:

* PC (x86 processor)

* PREP (PowerPC processor)

* PowerMac (PowerPC processor, in progress)

For user emulation, x86, PowerPC, ARM, and SPARC CPUs are supported.

Please be sure to visit http://www.bellard.com/qemu for further instructions.

Download open source QEMU 0.6.0 prebuilt for Solaris 9/10 x86. Screenshots are available as well.

Hi,

unfortunately my University Homepage at
http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~mbeinsx/ - containing all the hints, files
to download as well as some screenshots - is currently *down* for
whatever reason.

Please be patient and try again at a later time.
I don't have any privileges at user.cs.tu-berlin.de and cannot bring
httpd back up and running.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience,

M. Bochnig

Dear Solaris x86 users being interested in QEMU:
As my homepage is still down, I will try to find a replacement for it
ASAP (today?!)

I'll keep in touch with you and will post the new URL later.

Thanks,
Martin

Hi all,

a good soal (Jerker) was so kind to help me/us out:

The temporary URL is

http://user.it.uu.se/~jerker/qemu/

(no screenshots, no index.html at the moment).
But the pkg itself at
http://user.it.uu.se/~jerker/qemu/MB1Xqemu0_6_0__i386_solaris9_usr_local.pkg.gz

as well as the Readme file at
http://user.it.uu.se/~jerker/qemu/README.Solaris

Martin

Hi,

two good news:

#1
Due to the strategical support, help and Patches provided by Juergen
Keil from www.tools.de (most Solaris users - both SPARC and x86 - may
know him for his free drivers collection [Soundblaster and other
devices]), I will most probably be able to get guest networking to work
inside QEMU0.6.0 (or CVS) on top of Solarisx86 hosts.
I will update the package ASAP and will keep you informed via this ml.

#2
The URL of my new personal (QEMU/Solaris) website will be:
http://thinksolaris.com or http://www.thinksolaris.com (don't know yet,
since I don't run it by myself).
My webhosting provider says, it will be available within the next 48 hours.
Please check that out beginning with the end of this week.

Thanks
M.Bochnig

www.thinksolaris.com
is online now.

I plan to collect Solaris vs. QEMU related information there;
in order to make that information useable by anyone interested in it.

Maybe I will create a MiniHOWTO or FAQ at a later date - as soon as I
manage to find the required time.
You are welcome to submit your experience for publication.

I would like to thank QEMU's developers for making that VMware++ alike
product possible (and for having had NONmainstream platforms in mind).

Special thanks apply to Juergen Keil for having made his intellectual
property in form of his QEMU-Solaris Patches available to me.
As well as to Jerker Nyberg for helping out that fast by providing webspace.

Any critics, comments are appreciated.

Thanks

Well done Martin, honestly I never thought I'll see QEMU on Solaris.
Congratulations for everyone.

One question - any idea when/if we'll see QEMU on Solaris/SPARC (as
opposed to Solaris/x86) ?

My guess is that it'll be mighty hard to do, but surely I can wait in
anticipation :-)

cheers,
Harry

Hi Harry,

thanks to Eric's, Juergen's help (and even SUN Thailand sent me a patch
today for improving the sources bundled with the pkg) - I'm very happy
about that :))

Yes and no - I got it compiled under Solaris 10_60 SPARC (full system
emulation mode). The SDL window pops up. Executing qemu w/o arguments
prints usage information to the screen.
The QEMU "monitor" cli is functional.
But the emulation engine doesn't do anything, unfortunately not.

Under Linux SPARC, both system emulation as well as user mode Linux_x86
emulation do work (under certain circumstances; unstable).
Any ideas?

Martin
