The new network options are no longer compatible with the old ones and add several new features such as multiple VLAN emulation and sharing of VLANs between several QEMU instances. You can have more information by reading the "Invocation" section of the QEMU documentation. The default network configuration is similar to the old "-user-net" so that most users won't notice a difference. Users of TAP host interfaces must change their configuration to something like: qemu -net nic -net tap ... WARNING: as the code is rather new, regressions are possible ! Fabrice.
