My only suggestion would be to:

{ 'default-machine': 'pc',
    'machines': [{
      'name': 'pc',
      'description': 'Standard PC',
    },...]
}

I'd drop 'canonical' too.  Aliasing is an implementation detail and 
should not be exposed via the ABI.
