Hi,

I recently experienced some [fixable] corruption running reiser4 (which
caused any process attempting to access the fs to hang). Problem
occurred while compiling on this fs.

I have made a copy of the corrupted filesystem, so can provide further
details or run more tests if this would be helpful to you.

Dave

fsck.reiser4 (0.5.3) provided the following info:

Hi folks

I have some issues with KDE compilation on my computer.
I decided to give it a try (and test), and switched over /home
partition on one of my laptops to reiserfs v4. I am using debian
testing (knoppix installation) + 2.6.9-mm1.

Recently I had some issues compiling KDE (acctually in linking) that
might have source in fs corruption. SO I decided to run fsck.reiser4.
Logged output is attached. Tell me please if it's any help, or if
something else should be done.
I don't have anything in logs, FS wasn't compiled with debug options.

I'll run --build-fs on it now. When it's finished, I'll remove KDE
sources, suck them again from CVS, and try to rebuild. And fsck again.
We'll see if it's reproducable.

thanks.

2.6.9-rc1-mm1 (I assume that's what you are using) had a bad data
corruption bug affecting files with a size multiple of 4K. All
filesystems are affected, btw.
Avoid this kernel if you need your data...

[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: text/plain, Size: 1873 bytes --]

I have a corruption on my root file system and fsck.reiser4 is unable to
find or fix it. The system behaves normally until certain files in my
local kernel source tree are accessed, eg during the final stages of a
kernel compile. When the corrupt files are accessed, the entire file
system becomes locked out.
I have attached a screen-shot of the error message printed out when the
problem occurs.

Kernel version: 2.6.11.6
Reiser4 patch: reiser4-for-2.6.11-3.patch.gz
fsck.reiser4 version: 1.0.4

PS: The corruption was most likely caused by a bug in a kernel driver I
am currently working on, as there was an 'off by one' error in an array
parser. I suspect the driver overwrote some file system cache, which
eventually got written to disk.

thanks,

PPS: I think the problem is now cured, however there was something wrong
with the file system which fsck.reiser4 could not detect. This badness
caused further file system corruptions when writing to certain files was
attempted. I cured the problem by copying the directory tree containing
the corrupt files, to a new location. The kernel spewed out a few errors
while doing this, but the new copy can be accessed without causing
problems. I bravely deleted the old directory where the errors where
occurring, and rescanned the file system. Still no errors. The further
corruption which occurred as a result of writing to the already corrupt
files has caused a few library files being deleted. These were later
reinstalled.
Sorry about the slightly dis-jointed email, this is because the original
attachment was too big to be sent to the list, and the message was
bounced.

Keep up the good work, lets hope they let ReIsEr4 into the mainstream
kernel some time soon.

I recently experimented using reiser4 on a backup system that processes
millions of files (most hard links to a main pool of files) every night. I
installed it on a spare machine by patching a vanilla 2.6.11.11 with the
reiser4 patches. Everything keep working for a few days, but I suddenly
noticed this message displayed multiple times:

reiser4[ktxnmgrd:md0:ru(1754)]: commit_current_atom
(fs/reiser4/txnmgr.c:1147)[nikita-3176]:
WARNING: Flushing like mad: 16384

as well as:

reiser4[pdflush(28040)]: commit_current_atom
(fs/reiser4/txnmgr.c:1147)[nikita-3176]:
WARNING: Flushing like mad: 16384

Would someone mind explaining to me what this means? Upon fscking, it
complained about one node containing an unrecognizable module, or
something similar. Unfortunately, I don't have the exact output. Also, the
semantic checks would have taken 2-3 full days to finish, so I didn't even
let fsck finish. I just moved back to reiserfs, which is a shame since
reiser4 was incredibly faster. (Simultaneous backups were going at a rate
of ~20MB/s compared to ~8MB/s on reiserfs)

Thanks,

-Ross

This is harmless

What patch set did you apply? If this is the last one
(reiser4-for-2.6.11-5) there is some inconsistency due to format changes
that will be fixed in the next release.

Yes, it was reiser4-for-2.6.11-5. Would this inconsistency cause fsck to
find problems that just didn't exist? Would fsck's attempt to "fix" this
problem be harmful?

Thanks,

-Ross

The attached is a patch for reiser4progs-1.0.4 which should fix the
problem. Would you try it, please?

Which kernel version?
Is it annoying (reproducible)?

Thanks,

3.14.8

It doesn't come up frequently.

Last time I reported this --

http://www.spinics.net/lists/reiserfs-devel/msg03797.html

Which seems to be related.

What is the name of the file with Inode 3109170?
You can find out this by the following way:
$ find ~/ -inum 3109170

Also I would ask you to
1) fsck you partition with the option --build-fs;
2) send me the fsck logs;
3) upgrade you kernel to 3.16 or later, or build a new one with the
following patch applied:
     http://marc.info/?l=reiserfs-devel&m=141176163530650&w=2
4) let me know, if the problem hasn't gone away.

Thanks,
Edward.

Yes, that's how I came to know this was a problem with the FF
configuration directory. It's an image (snapshot of one of the entries
in the new tab page in FF). Last time it was also an image.

I've hardlinked that image to another place and remove the original copy.

I'll return to you.
