Compared to other fileystems (including reiserfs) mount times of reiser4
is *huge* and mounting takes most of my boot time.

Here's a simple time output of reiser4 and ext4 fs, nearly identical in
size.

# df- h
/dev/sdb2 428G 339G 89G 80% /film
/dev/sdb4 429G 262G 145G 65% /film2

# time mount /film

real	0m23.238s
user	0m0.000s
sys	0m0.096s

# time mount /film2

real	0m0.069s
user	0m0.000s
sys	0m0.012s

# mount
/dev/sdb2 on /film type reiser4 (rw,noatime)
/dev/sdb4 on /film2 type ext4 (rw,noatime)

Can I improve the situation with tweaks, or help you to investigate it?

Thanks that fixed my problem. I should have searched it before. I find
that it was discussed many times. As far as I read, lazy loading of
bitmap blocks shouldn't have a dramatic performance effect. Is that true?

Are there any visible disk activity while freezing?

Here's what I could find from dmesg.

Ok, I'll try to reproduce this..

Edward.

I'l try to give more details if I reproduce it. Meanwhile I'm giving
disto kernel details which I should have done before.
$ uname -a
Linux firari 2.6.36-gentoo-r3 #24 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jan 8 09:08:01 EET
2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6700 @ 2.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I'm using the official patch against Gentoo patched kernel.

This time pidgin just halted and Thunderbird froze. It's just
Thunderbird freezing you can move on, your mous works etc. But as soon
as I restart X, X freezes somewhere where a cursor exists. I can do
anything on virtual consoles by the way. There doesn't seem to be
serious disk activity afterwards, but I wasn't able to capture the
moment pidgin crashed. It might be some pressure issue I suppose.
