I get a build error in arch/x86/kernel/setup.c:

   CC      arch/x86/kernel/setup.o
arch/x86/kernel/setup.c: In function ‘ima_get_kexec_buffer’:
arch/x86/kernel/setup.c:385:15: error: implicit declaration of function ‘ima_validate_range’

make[1]: *** [scripts/Makefile.build:503: arch/x86] Fehler 2
make: *** [Makefile:2025: .] Fehler 2
root@linus:/usr/src/linux-stable-rc#

I always do my test builds with CONFIG_WEROR=Y, full .config attached.

The line causing the error seems to come from

73b97ee06bd63 x86/kexec: add a sanity check on previous kernel's ima kexec buffer [ Upstream commit
c5489d04337b47e93c0623e8145fcba3f5739efd ]

via

Pull non-MM updates from Andrew Morton

If I revert 73b97ee06bd635433d1c429ecdbc9167da5de588, the build succeeds, and the kernel boots and seems to work fine.

Interesting: I didn't get an email that this got queued to 6.1.165,
note: this is not in 6.1.165-rc1, but in 6.1.165-rc2.

I only got: FAILED: Patch "x86/kexec: add a sanity check on previous
kernel's ima kexec buffer" failed to apply to 6.1-stable tree

In any case: we need a prerequisite for this, so I will work on
backports in a few days, I think for now, we should drop this commit
from 6.1.y.

Also I see something unusual -->

6.1.165-rc1 --> 232 patches.

6.1.165-rc2 --> 533 patches.

Can you please check ?

Thanks,
Harshit

I didn't even get a warning for this one :/

I'll drop it and push the -rc2 branch again for all affected kernels.

That's the reason for -rc2 :) See:

Wouldn't it better to push a -rc3 branch then, so as to not create confusion? (I'm confused now... 🤔🙄)

Or did you actually mean rc3?

Also, the causing patch ("x86/kexec: add a sanity check on previous kernel's ima kexec buffer") is in all others 6.x.y
-rc2s from today, so maybe Harshit should quickly check to which 6.x.y stable branches this patch was meant to be
backported/included?

Thanks, but shouldn't the 533 - 232 = 301 patches be sent to stable
mailing list ?

Also not speaking about 6.1.y, but when rc1 passes tests, I don't
trigger tests for rc2. Should I always retrigger tests for 6.12.X-rc2 ?

Usually rc1 --> rc2 --> its mostly 2-5 patches in general.

Thanks,
Harshit

Yup, this one ended up being a bit bigger :)

I didn't send out the whole batch of mails, but it's indeed a larger update.

I just force pushed a new -rc2, and dropped the offending patch from all
branches for now.

This one will end up being a slightly bigger release, and we can revisit this
commit and any others we had to drop for the next cycle.

Ok, great, thanks! Will pull all 6.x branches again and retest...

Agreed. When we're in the middle of testing, please don't force-push over the
top. It makes a mess. I just spend quite a while retesting because suddenly my
branch was out of sync and I thought I'd broken something.

Once you've called it, keep it.

TBH it would make life a *lot* easier if RCs were properly tagged as such.

Cheers,

Brett

So this 2nd incarnation of -rc2 (57e92ee8bab0fe5c2396925771b394f13d531cc7) now builds, boots and works fine on my
2-socket Ivy Bridge Xeon E5-2697 v2 server. No dmesg oddities or regressions found.
