[U-Boot-Users] Blank console with IXDP425 in U-boot-1.1.6

Hi Everybody,

Iam a newbie in this field. I have a customed target board having IXP425. 
This board has been working fine with Redboot. I do not have the working
source code for Redboot but only the bin file which works fine. 
I now want to customise the u-boot and make u-boot the bootloader for this
board. 

I have downloaded u-boot-1.1.6. Also I have downloaded the npe microcode
from intel website (IPL_ixp400NpeLibrary-2_4). 
The tool chain I have downloaded is arm-linux-tools-20061213.tar.gz
I have added the toolchain in my $PATH (.bash_profile file) 
I complied my u-boot for IXDP425 by giving the command "make ixdp425_config"
and the "make all"
It complied sucessfully and gave me a u-boot.bin and u-boot.srec file. 

I used this u-boot.bin file and loaded it into my target board flash using
an ICE. after this is accomplished, I restarted the board and connected the
console of my target board so that i could observe the bootloader prompt on
the hyperterminal.
I see nothin on the console (hyperterminal)
I have connect it with baud rate 115200, 8 data bits, parity bits none, 1
stop bit and flow control as none. I even tried with flow control as
hardware.

Please advise where i could be going wrong and how i should proceed.

Yes, but if I understand you correctly, then you don't have the Intel IXDP425 
board, but a custom specific board. Correct? I assume that there are some 
differences to the Intel board. What are those differences? You have to 
*port* U-Boot to your specific hardware.

As mentioned above, using a binary compiled for a different board will in most 
cases not work.

Could it be that your hardware uses a different UART?
I had similar problem with a board of my customer that used different
UART. in his case the change was simple, just change
CFG_IXP425_CONSOLE from IXP425_UART1 to IXP425_UART2 in
include/configs/ixdp425.h

Check the UART in you board.

Yes.. U r right. Iam not using the ixdp425 (development) board.
What iam using is a customised board having IXP425.

On this board, I tried with the REDBOOT prebuilt utility for ixdp425 board (
development board) from the web and I could see the console message on my
hyperterminal. 

I was wondering y I cannot observe the same with my U-boot. is there any
extra configuration needed?

I checked the CFG_IXP425_CONSOLE macro in u-boot and saw thats its assigned
to IXP425_UART1 of the IXP425 chip. I also checked the circuit diagram of my
customised target platform and found that the console is connected to UART1
only.

What could be causing this problem?

Check crystal rate.
Although usually if you have a wrong clock frequency, you will get
garbage characters.

Is there any way I can find out the difference between the IXDP425  board
(development platform) and my customised board? I have the schematics only
of my customised target platform. 

From the schematics its clear that the IXP425 266MHz network processor uses
the 33MHz PCI bus. The Expansion bus is connected to the Flash (Boot ROM).
the SDRAM used is 4M*16*2. Serial port is connected to UART1 and MII 1 to
the Lan port PHY. 
The physical address for Flash is (0x50000000) and SDRAM (0x00000000).
 
Do I have any changes in the /include/configs/ixdp425.h ?
CFG_HZ is 3333333 currently.
What r the files in U-boot i have to concentrate on? And what r the other
things i have to check for considering Iam a newbie in this field.

Can it be that I havent used the right cross toolchain to compile? R there
some options i have to select? 
I have used arm-linux-tools-20061213.tar.gz ??

Can someone please guide me.

You should be able to get the schematics for the Intel eval board from the 
Intel. If it's not available on the web-page, then you should contact your 
Intel distributor/FAE.

I suspect that you have a problem either with the boot-flash setup or the 
SDRAM configuration. Here the setup from the ixdp425.h config file:

Hi Stefan,

I checked the SDRAM setting and the SDRAM controller options of IXP425, 
the SDRAM Iam using is Winbond W981216DH-75, Iam using two such SDRAM's
connected to CS0 having D0-D15 and D16-D31 datalines respectively. Hence Iam
using total size of 32MB SDRAM (2 SDRAM's of 128Mbit --> 8Mx16)
The SDRAM Iam using is have CL3 (CAS latency 3)

accordingly I have changed by SDRAM Seetings as below

How can i calcualte the CFG_SDRAM_REFRESH_CNT and the CFG_EXP_CS0?
In U-boot, the values given r as below?

#define CFG_EXP_CS0		0xbcd23c42

How can i find it for my target board? 

I tried with the above setting but i still could not get my console to be
working :(

1> Why is the CFG_HZ as 3333333 ? Is this for the Bus for UART? I read its
66MHz
2> What us CONFIG_KGDB_SER_INDEX? Its now set to 2, is it connected to my
serial console port?

Thanx alot for all your valuable inputs. Finally got the console working for
my customised IXP422 based target board. 
This maybe useful for someone else trying...

Bootloader: U-boot 1.1.6 with npe microcode 2.4
(IPL_ixp400NpeLibrary-2_4)from Intel 
Toolchain : arm-linux-tools-20061213.tar.gz 
Settings used r below:

One thing which i got confused was that,
the Schematics of IXDP425 (Development board from Intel) mentioned the UARTs
and UART0 and UART1. While the IXP42X datasheet mentions High-speed UART
(C8000000) and Console UART at (C8001000)
and U-boot mentions the UARTs as UART1 and UART2

Hence even though in my customed target board schematics the console is
shown as connecte to UART1, 
in u-boot you have to choose the UART2 option as shown above.

I have got the console up but my ethernet is not yet up. Now my next target
is to get that working. Any tips for me :)

Few questions--
1> Why is the CFG_HZ as 3333333 ? Is this for the Bus for UART? I read its
66MHz
2> What us CONFIG_KGDB_SER_INDEX? Its now set to 2, is it connected to my
serial console port? 
Iam using two SDRAM's 128Mbit each, connected to CS0 having D0-D15 and
D16-D31 datalines respectively. Hence Iam using total size of 32MB SDRAM (2
SDRAM's of 128Mbit --> 8Mx16)
3> What is PHYS_SDRAM_1_SIZE? Will it be the total SDRAM size or size of 1
SDRAM?? I tried iwth both options and didnt see any difference.
Please let me know.

You were lucky then.

Lot's of things could go wrong. For example the SDRAM setup. Or the input 
clock frequency. Or some GPIO's. Or etc...

You have to figure out the differences between your board and the Intel eval 
board and change the U-Boot files accordingly.
