No. There has been a lot of experience with working in a not formally
organized group. Usenet is much, much older even. There has been a
long tradition of newsgroups and mailing lists, which both have their
special benefits, andvantages and disadvantages.
IRC may be fine for making an appointment for dinner, or guiding
somebody through a debug session or the like. It is not appropriate
as the SINGLE channel for kernel development.

I will be happy to do that. In a medium where others can find the
information, too. Even if they don;t happen to be online the very
same moment.
