i like to run `make -s` to better pick out warnings and stuff ... the
hardcoded "$(AR) crv" gets in the way
ive moved all of the "crv" stuff to the toplevel config.mk as ARFLAGS so
people can change as they see fit without having to edit a ton of makefiles
