I needed to do this in U-Boot 1.1.4 for an MPC83xx based board, so I
backported the relevant parts of that patch series. In case someone else
would find it useful, I've attached the resulting patch to this mail.
And in case someone feels like taking a look at the patch, comments are
welcome.
