Jerry,
Is there a way to boot an old kernel with a LIBFDT enabled u-boot?
I'm not seeing the equivalent of the disable_of env variable we had
with the older code.

Sure, I'm doing it all the time. Just use the "old" bootm syntax.

Why would you need such a variable?
