Well, then undo that change, please?

It doesn't make sense to me. Note that you only  change  the  default
environment,  i.  e.  all the installed systems out in the field will
most probably still use the old names anyway, even if they update  to
a recent version of U-Boot...

The explanation requiring the fewest assumptions is the  most  likely
