I don't know the history of both drivers, but indeed it seems that the AT91-custom dataflash driver should be replaced by the corresponding SPI flash driver. I'll dig into this and see what I can do. However, I only have a Calao USB-A9263 board and an Atmel AT91SAM9261EK board here, so I won't be able to test on all Atmel evaluation boards.
