Try simply doint what you intent to do:
=> setenv bootdelaykey '
'
That should do the trick.
Note that itis a bit tricky to check this with printenv. You will see
this:
...
=> printenv bootdelaykey
bootdelaykey=
=>
or:
=> printenv
...
bootdelaykey=\
...
