Hi!

If I do "make socfpga_cyclone5_config" and then build u-boot-SPL, it
results in SPL that is way too big (49K is biggest image that works in
my testing).

please try enabling CONFIG_USE_TINY_PRINTF if not already done.
It helped me with socfpga SPL issues in v2016.05.

That's a start, otherwise it boils down the readelf and analyzing what
is taking space and where to save space.
