Hello list,
because of a new Flash Chip i must compile u-boot and in than implement
the changes for the Atmel AT49BV6416T, which has different Architecture
than the AT49BV6416.
I can build several Versions of u-boot ( 1.1.1, 1.1.4,... ) but all give
the same Problem. I start with "make at91rm9200dk_config" and then "make
all" and it gives me a u-boot.bin. When i load it with loader.bin it
starts and nothing ist done or printed. If i compare with the Atmel
delivered loader.bin which runs correctly it's size is a little bit
different. I use the arm-linux-gcc 3.3.6 in Debian Version.
Are there any special settings to be done, who has a running Version for
this Board ?
THX
Thomas

You don't have to be surprised if you chose a configuration for a
different system and it doesn't work. You have port U-Boot to your
hardware.

Hello,
for the first step of reproducing a runnig u-boot i use the original Atmel Board.
Here the u-boot does nothing after load with loader.bin.
The Atmel delivered u-boot.bin does normal work.
U-boot is build with the desribed steps without any Error Messages.
make at91rm9200dk_config
make all
Then X-Modem the loader.bin and then X-Modem the u-boot.bin to the AT91RM9200-EK
and after this nothing happens.
Are there further Things to configure, i didn't read ?

What makes you think the default configuration of U-Boot would need
any loader.bin stuff? Instead, it will boot directly.

Hello Wolfgang,
AFAIK the AT91RM9200 Boot Sequence only allows 16k-4k size for the first Programm,
E.g. the loader.bin.
The u-boot.bin ist about 92k, so it cant't be loaded directly.
First the loader.bin ist executed which initializes the external SDRAM an it then loads u-boot.bin to external SDRAM.
How can the u-boot be configured to be used so, i didn't find any hints.

U-Boot boots from NOR flash, where no such restriction exists. Also
please note that the existing code is for the at91rm9200dk, not the
ek (not sure if this matters, though).

Hello Wolfgang,
that is an important Information:
The original u-boot is build for running out of the NOR -Flash and not for serial Download and run out of RAM - did i understand correctly ?
The Atmel Evaluation Board Docs describe a way of
A) X-Modem a loader.bin to RAM and start it
B) X-Modem an u-boot.bin to RAM and start it
C) Kermit with this boot.bin and flash this with u-boot
D) Kermit a u-boot.gz and flash this
After configuring the cpu to "boot external" it then runs out of the flash.
The Atmel Docs also write to generate the binary only delivered Files the two steps:
1) Patch the Source for Support of the soldered Flash Chip
2) Compile it
But with your words, if i do so only a Version of u-boot for direct flashing to the NOR Flash Chip is generated.
Is there a way to generate an u-boot Version for the Way Atmel describes in
any Version or have i to ask Atmel how they patched their Version ?
THX

Yes.

Please contact Atmel support for things they do and write. They use
their own code, so they will have to support it.

I have no idea what Atmel descibes (and I don't care), but I guess
the CONFIG_SKIP_LOWLEVEL_INIT config option is what you are looking
for. Please read the documentation (README).

Thomas,
if you have to program NOR parallel Flash you simply need to Remove the
resistor R159 on the AT91RM9200-DK to start the processor from its
internal boot ROM.
Read the Datasheet
In any case for your (and other) reference I added some links here

Hello Marco,
my Board doesn't have any Software, the Flash is empty and so i start from the internal ROM - clearly.
But now i must do a Download on the serial Port of loader.bin which then does a serial Download of u-boot.bin.
This is the Atmel described way to initialize a "new" System or to do an Update.
But with the original u-boot Sources 1.1.1 or 1.1.4 the generated u-boot.bin doesn't run, the Atmel delivered binary u-boot.bin does.
So i'm looking what to do with u-boot, so that it is loadable like the Atmel one.
Who knows if there are any #defines to set (especially for this CPU/Platform) or where any Dokumentation for this can be found ?

No, this is not so clear at all. You can for example just program the
U-Boot image to flash using a JTAG debugger.

As mentioned before: please conatact Atmel support with questions
about or problems with the way Atmel recommends to do things.
Here we support the public U-Boot code only, not some vendor provided
(and most probably obsolete) versions.

Your statement is wrong. The images run perfectly fine here both on a
AT91RM9200-DK kit and on a couple of custom boards.

Hello Wolfgang,
i did read all your replies and didn't ignore them.
I only folowed the by Atmel described way to compile u-boot and it didn't run
so i contacted this u-boot-user mail list for further Information - what would you have done ?
My Statement isn't wrong, in the desribed way it doesn't run.
I recognize that Atmel modified the public Sources for their needs and that they only can give me further hints.
Thanks for your precius time

To me it seems you did. For example, I wrote:
... but I guess the CONFIG_SKIP_LOWLEVEL_INIT config option
is what you are looking for. Please read the documentation
(README).
and I see no indication that you did so.

Anarchy may not be the best form of government, but it's better than
no government at all.

Hello Wolfgang,
that Information isn't new so i forgot to answer for this.
If i set a #define CONFIG_SKIP_LOWLEVEL_INIT in the include/configs/at91rm9200dk.h
( and appending an #ifdef CONFIG_SKIP_LOWLEVEL_INIT around Function cpu_init_crit: in init.S to avoid an error message )the resulting u-boot.bin is a few Bytes shorter but it doesn't run after load by loader.bin, too.
So i thought there must be another Setting,
CONFIG_BOOTBINFUNC was another Tip in Mail List but doesn't help too.
I started a Request at Atmel, perhaps they will give a Patch or something else.
THX for your Help
Thomas

Actually you need some patches not yet applied
if you play with CONFIG_SKIP_LOWLEVEL_INIT and AT91.
Please see ML history.
Ciao
