I?m a little confused! What?s the difference between initramfs and initrd?

How can I create a runable initramfs for my linux Kernel?

Where can I found an example for a rootfs (2.6.10)?

Is a initramfs or initrd essential for a linux prompt?

Because at the moment my serial output shows only this:

U-BOOT# bootm 50040000
## Booting image at 50040000 ...
   Image Name: NS9750 Kernel
Image Type: ARM Linux Kernel Image (uncompressed)
   Data Size: 1074991 Bytes = 1 MB
   Load Address: 00000000
   Entry Point: 00000000
   Verifying Checksum ... OK
OK

Starting kernel ...
