Hello

From a recent conversation on the same list:

No, kermit cannot download to flash, it's only talking to the serial
line. If you had a working U-Boot running on your target, you could
use that, but so you have a chicken & egg problem...

No, you cannot. See the FAQ:

Thanks in advance

I use also Wind River ICE SX with my board, and I have the same problem, I
can't load u-boot in RAM. So it's no possible, we have to find another idee.
I think it's maybe possible to launch ours boards with an old boatloader and
then to load with serial interface or tftp the uboot image and to flash it?

InRAM

I'm personally getting a little tired of seeing all of the responses saying
that it isn't possible to bring u-boot up in RAM. I brought up to new
PXA255 boards that had dead flash on the first rev board. It is necessary
to set up the init so that it doesn't run the ram initialization when
running from ram, but it is possible. Granted, you do have to know what you
are doing, but if you have brand new hardware you had better or you'll never
get it running.

Greg Lindberg

Please pay more attention to the questions asked. These people ask if
they can build an image, and before burning it to flash, load it to
RAM and test it. If this is working, they want to burn the very same
image to flash.

And this cannot be done in the general case. Exceptions may exist.

Right, so you are running *modified* code, and don't get *any*
evidence that the flash configuration will work.

Yes, I'm running modified code, I had to set up the initialization to handle
the CPU and peripherals that are on the boards that we built. Other than
that when we got boards that were laid out correctly and the flash worked I
burned the flash from u-boot. We have always run only one image, the same
image runs in RAM or from flash, I just check at init time what the current
address is and do the DRAM controller init if in flash.

I have a need to run a small binary before u-boot runs on a PPC8541. With that in mind, I have the binary, it compiles & links, but has a behavior at the last step of compilation I dont quite understand and it relates to the behavior of objcopy as used in uboot/Makefile.

This doesnt work
$ ppc_85xx-objcopy --gap-fill 0xff -O binary microStart microStart.bin

This works and creates the proper binary
$ ppc_85xx-objcopy -O binary microStart microStart.bin

So, my question is "What is it about using a gap fill that would cause this error?"

My apologies. The error when specifying a --gap-fill of either 0x00 or 0xff is

File size limit exceeded

I have seen this with .section not completely defined, but not with a --gap-fill before and am wondering why the gap fill would cause this.

I also have a second question.

I can single step through the binary with a BDI2000, but only from the object viewpoint, that is stepi works, but step doesnt. I think there may be an incantation for the assembler to pass a debug flag similar to the -g for the compiler. Something like -Wa,-dwarf (sic). Can someone tell me what the incantation is?

Charles

We knew that, that was a teaching exercise. :-) Next lesson is bottom
posting on emails. :-O

The reason for your --gap-fill problem is because you have an enormous
gap somewhere in your memory map/elf file. When you --gap-fill, it
creates a file filled with 0x00/0xFF which turns into an enormous file.
When you don't --gap-fill, the file simply has a gap. Look at your
memory map and the elf file (non --gap-filled ;-) - obdump is your
friend) and see where and why you have an enormous gap in your linked
file. Usually the solution is fairly obvious once you understand why.
It may be as simple as not using --gap-fill because it hurts to
--gap-fill, it may be because you have something wrong in your linker
configuration file - *.lds).

My speculation (based on 82xx experience, not 85xx) is that you have a
HRCW defined at offset zero or at the start of your flash (0xFE000000 or
something like that) and are "booting high" (start of program at
0xFFF00100) which is an enormous gap. If you make a bin without filling
the gap, your HRCW is in the "wrong place" but it is ignored and life
works. If you --gap-fill, you make an enormous file and your file
system isn't happy.

WRT you single step question, I'm not sure (don't do it). If you are
trying to step through u-boot, see
   <http://www.denx.de/wiki/DULG/DebuggingUBoot>
There are hints on how to step through the linux kernel as well, but I'm
too lazy to google it right now.

Best regards,
gvb
