This is the code in the new include/asm-generic/global-data.h:

So it does not exist in every case.
The reason I add this condition is so that the cmd_bdinfo.c code can
compile both for ARM and for generic board. Whether to use generic
board or not is not a board option (as suggested by Wolfgang) so the
code must compile either way. I cannot really make generic board
always have this field since it is a waste of space, particularly for
platforms with no such concept.
If you like I could make fb_base conditional in ARM's global_data.h also.

We want to unify the global_data structure. Most fields are common across
architectures, but there are a fair number of SOC-specific additions. It
isn't clear how best to deal with these, but for now we just use #ifdef.

We create a separate header file for link symbols defined by the link
scripts. It is helpful to have these all in one place and try to
make them common across architectures. Since Linux already has a similar
file, we bring this in even though many of the symbols there are not
relevant to us.

other.
It is intended that we move to a more powerful initcall implementation
as proposed by Graeme Russ <graeme.russ@gmail.com>. For now, this allows

It starts up the console, DRAM, performs relocation and then jumps
to post-relocation init.

Link symbols as created by the link script can either be absolute or
relative to the text start. This option switches between the two options
so that we can support both.
As we convert architectures over to generic board, we can see if this
option is actually needed, or whether it is possible to unify this feature
also.

I haven't had huge numbers of comments on this series, but there are a
few. I plan to tidy these up and resubmit, dropping the RFC tag,
sometime this week.
Any patches / fixes to make this run properly on x86 / PPC would be
gratefully accepted.

An update - Graeme asked me to wait until the x86 refactor is pulled -
still waiting for that. Hopefully soon.

OK that's great, have pulled it in and rebased. Not sure why I missed
it. Wolfgang are you going to pull this soon? I will make my generic
board patch sit on top of it.
