I have done some more searching and it appears a patch was posted to CVS for
the 2.6 kernel to support initrd's stored in flash.

I have searched CVS etc. and am unable to find it :(

The patch was against a 2.4 kernel.

I had the same problem and solved it by copying the ramdisk to a sdram location before booting the kernel.
