This is why it almost works :-) The error is caused because the tool tries to write a single byte using the character device /dev/mtd1 which is obviously not allowed. You can (probably) get rid of it if you use the block device /dev/mtdblock1 in your config file. But the fw_setenv tool of course still doesn't know about the different meanings of the NAND environment header fields.
