As I thought about this more I realized that the user might have been
careless and misconstructed the payloads in myriad of ways. The patch
that is threaded attempts to fix this case.

I can squash it as part of the initial 'microcode: Scan the initramfs
payload for microcode blob" if that would be preferred of course.
