So I tried it all over again from scratch with the xen-testing.hg tree
at commit  19924 and it doesn't panic any more.  It gets to booting
the kernel, then locks up when trying to bring the networking up, but
at least it doesn't have the same panic anymore.

Sorry about the false alarm. I probably gaffed something with hg on
the previous go round..
