I am adding a public domain implementation of md5 to blktap2, so that it
doesn't need ssl or gcrypt to work anymore.

IMO it is not a good idea to replicate library functions. Dependency
on libraries isn't necessarily a bad thing. These functions are in
libraries for a reason and that is reuse. If there are differences
across the distros, it should be solved with the check scripts (as it
is done everywhere).

This might be a trivial example to pick (just an md5 function), but still.

Why is that better than requiring installation of one of gcrypt or crypto
libs?

Because we are requiring installation (and redistribution in case of
products based on Xen) of a crypto library just for a simple MD5
checksum function.

Redistributing a crypto library is not easy: openssl is difficult to
redistribute due to the BSD advert clause, while gcrypto on the other
hand is difficult to redistribute outside of the United States as part
of a product because it requires explicit authorization for the exact
libgcrypto binary you are using.
I know that Debian and other distros have already sorted out all that,
but I still think that introducing all this pain just for an MD5
function is unreasonable.
