MacBook Pro Yonah (Intel Core Duo)

Dear all;

 

Has anyone tried the new CPU (codename Yonah) produced by Apple? I heard
from the engineer of Apple that MacBook Pro is already reachable, although
it is not distributed to the public until February. If anyone has some
information, I would like to buy it to enlarge the frontier.

 

-- Does Yonah demand xen/i86 or xen/ppc? Or we need brand-new source code?
That is the problem. Is Windows XP on Fedora Core 5 / ppc still dreamers'
rumour?

There are several other manufacturers (Samsung, Dell, etc) at a similar stage 
with their Yonah laptops, so you'll be seeing those on sale soonish too, 
hopefully.

Yonah is basically just x86, it's not gonna run any PPC software (unless you 
use an emulator like QEmu on Linux / Windows, or PearPC, or Apple's own 
"Rosetta" if you're running OS X).

Eventually (but possibly not straight away), Yonah systems will have the VT 
extensions enabled, and you'll be able to use Xen to run Windows XP on top of 
x86 Linux on your laptop (or whatever...).

MacRumor says Yonah will have (or already has?) the Intel Virtualization
Technology. But the engineer did not reveal whether it is true.

Some people tried to work Windows XP over Xen/i386 3.0 by using the image
file of Qemu, but they reported it is not stable.

It's certainly in the silicon.  But it needs for Intel to enable it, and for 
there to be a compatible BIOS.  I think the latter two are still in doubt...  
It'll definitely be enabled in later Yonahs though.

Depends what revision of 3.0 you use.  There are fixes and improvements all 
the time in the -unstable branch.  VT support is still maturing, but it does 
run test suites stably under XP these days.  Performance optimisation and 
fixing some corner cases is still ongoing.

So for those of us looking to buy a VT laptop, I have a few questions
to make sure I understand this.  Is the VT functionality provided by
the chip set in stone or is it still in flux?  If it is set in stone,
then the issues of getting XP to run are just software(xen)/bios
issues?  If this is so then when laptops advertised they are "VT
enabled" waiting for a while won't necessarily get you better
functionality per se (just the longer you wait the better the software
will be and the cheaper the laptop will be).

Hopefully this makes sense.  I need to get a laptop soon, and I'd
definitely like to be able to have VT working.  Any advice?

I'm sure somebody knows what the state of affairs is - it's all designed, with 
hardware shipping, etc.  I'm not sure myself though.

Well, you've still got to get a laptop where the manufacturer hasn't disabled 
VT in the BIOS.  And, for that matter, where the chip allows it - Intel has 
been known to disable chip features they don't quite want to release yet.  
It's certainly *in there* somewhere but it's not necessarily the case that 
you can access it.

Check out the new Yonah-based PC laptops, and keep an eye out for news on the 
new MacBooks.

It seems to me as though VT laptops ought to be on shelves reasonable soon 
(next few months?) but I don't have specific market information.
