I have used a basic 486 with a 2gb hd, but with a small windowmanager (IceWM)
with no problems.

Do you mean how *big*? It depends on what you mean by "Desktop environment"
and what else the system is running.
I've used a 486/40 with 16 MB RAM, running X and wfvm95, but it didn't do
much more than that (just ran the usual background apps, some xterms, and
otherwise acted as a remote X terminal for use with a server). Some of the
newer minimalist X desktops, like blackbox or ICE, would probably handle
this sort of setup pretty well.
If you are wondering about environments like KDE or Gnome ... they will
require more in the way of resources. I have very little eperience with
these high-demand desktops, so someone else will have to address that part.

486 12M Ram 540MB hd fvwm2 as wm (also working twm,
fvwm, mwm, qvwm and others)
Aaaaaaaa, you mean desktop environment :-)
UDE i think is a small desktop environement.
If you want Gnome or Kde: go buy some ram.

Recently i was looking for a small distro to install at my old
486SX-4Mb-100Mb. At www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions are a couple
of small distro's, and i tried BasicLinux. It runs o.k.
You need a basic DOS ( i installed full, 10 Mb). From there you
can run a RAM-linux ( I needed a 4Mb-ram supplemental pkg) . Next a HD
install. ( supplemental HD package)
The zImage stays in a DOS directory, and the text-mode installa-
tion takes 7Mb. There are pkg's for icewm (bas-html.tgz),mc, Slackware 3.5
add-ons, it's in the docs.
Actually i subscribed to this mailinglist, because it was somewhere
mentioned , and expected hundreds of users, writing thousands of mails
about it.

I mentioned that my PC had a 2gb HD simply because I needed for Fidonet stuff,
not GUI. I refuse to use GUI as I much prefer console/command-line :)
