Suse 8.1 (passwords, install of packages)

When I created my user account it truncated my password to 8 characters.
Any way around this?

Playing with the suse tool I wanted to install some packages but it asks
me for the cd. I installed via ftp.

As root start YAST

Security -> settings
go to second screen
Password length
