Hey,
I'm getting the same problem, thought it may be my new burner, i have a
log of the attempted burn and my kernel config at
http://daedalus.dynu.net:81 The error is almost the same thing, however
sometimes I tend to get an ultra/dma 33 error. Disabling DMA on
everything except disks in kernel config had no effect on that. This
error is not random however it occurs after 63488 bytes every time. This
is a brand new Teac 40x drive on a Abit VH6T which has a VIA IDE
Controller, its the only device on its channel and it reads fine. I'd
appreciate any input on this.

It was a dummy burn. I didn't realize that the CDR medium mattered here?
So just to be on the safe side I tried again with a different brand disc
and had a failure after about 70MiB of data.

Me idiot. Haven't noticed that "dummy" word. How about going back to some
previous working kernel to try if it works? I have burnt quite a few CDRWs
under 2.4.18 so I assume it's ok here. BTW, I always give right dev=x,y,z
options, which I get from "cdrecord -scanbus".

I don't know if there ever was a working kernel that's what I'd like to know.
How do I differentiate bad hardware from a kernel problem?

Actually I did too: "dev=0,0,0" as determined by "cdrecord -scanbus".

So, basically you haven't tested this drive on any other kernels, right?
Let me guess, did you just get the drive at an Auction?
I'm burning on a scsi 4x and ide 16x with 2.4.19-pre6-vm33.
I have another scsi 12x that is having some trouble, and needs more testing,
so I may be able to help if I find a way to get that working.

Hi
One of problems that may be affecting us is the method used to burn.
Is the fact that some CD-writers don't know how to to Disk at Once, and can
only do Track at once. What I noticed, is that some versions of kernel or
possibly hardware (such as mine Phillips CD-writer) seem to work correctly if
you do tasks in a certain order such don't request atip info and then attempt
to write the data as Disk at once that fails, and then write it track at
once. but if I do Track at once the first it fails, note i have not really
done the extensive testing of this. Just my observations, do it in the wrong
order, the cd-writer locks up and only responds to power down. Which is verry
fustrating, and also possibly creates a nice shiny coaster.
I have read that Disk at Once mode works for writers that understand that
mode of writing, but the track at once is the one that is currently broken,
that explains why some us are complaining and others say that all is fine.

Do you mean cdrecord or the kernel ?
DiscAtOnce only works with newer models. I suspect that something is broken with late versions of cdrecord (>=1.10) cause burning with cdrdao works for other persons.
So adding "-dao" and "-pad" when you're burning audio to your commandline you should be on the safe side for now.

"dummy" is a technical term, applying to the curn method and your
answer;-) Don't you hate it when you read past information like that?

DAO should work for any device which supports it. That's not double-speak,
cdrecord returns the capabilities of the drive, and I believe it correctly
rejects asking for something the hardware can't do.
Read the docs carefully, I believe you can use RAW96 or similar modes on
older burners. I doubt that's the problem, though, I suspect burner
hardware.
The cd burning list is cdwrite@other.debian.org, send "subscribe cdwrite"
to majordomo there and ask the list if you don't get all you need there.

Not much sleep and too much Internet makes Tomek a... sleepy boy. :-).

They may ask you to check if your cables are ok. Especially if you just
mounted cdrecorder into PC.
