Configuring ALSA in kernel-2.5

Configuring ALSA in kernel-2.5

[Louis Garcia]

The documentation in current 2.5 kernel is a bit out dated. Can someone
show me what modules to choose in order to sound working for a SB Live
card with oss emulation? I've tried several combos but can't get
/dev/mixer os /dev/sequencer going. After compiling kernel should I
compile alsa-libs then alsa-oss compat library?

These modules load ok when I modprobe. I think I have to install
alsa-libs and the oss compat lib? The kernel documentation should be
updated soon.

You didn't mention if you're using devfsd or not. I'll assume that it's not working for you since 2.5.66 requires a new devfs daemon, which isn't available as binary for most distros.

The above being noted, make sure that you run ./snddevices to create the alsa devices in /dev ..

you don't need alsa-libs or the oss-compat lib for oss functionality .. the above should be enough ..

also, make sure that your user has permission to write to /dev/dsp.

you'll probably need a mixer to unmute the audio. alsa, by design, mutes all audio channels.

technically, you don't need to run the script, with one really huge catch. you need a working devfsd. with the recent devfsd update, that's not really a possibility, therefore you need the script.

if you're seriously going to use alsa, it's worth updating the 2.5 kernel's alsa with one from CVS or a recent release. the kernel version is old and crusty.

if you've been watching the alsa-devel mailing list, I sent out a message a week ago asking how to do this.

the quick and sloppy answer to this is:
1. download and extract alsa (tgz or cvs) and kernel
2. in /usr/src/linux-2.5.xx/sound, do: "cp -Rf /path_to_alsa/alsa-kernel/* ."
3. in /usr/src/linux-2.5.xx/include/sound, do: "cp -Rf /path_to_alsa/alsa-kernel/include/* ."

that should be enough to update alsa in the kernel.

I finally got sound working, thanks. Now if I can only get the modules
to load at boot. Here is the sysinit script part that deals with sound.
How can I modify it to load the alsa modules and oss compat modules?
Oh also, gnome-volume-control does not seem to know that alsa is muted.
Is their a way, possibly in /proc or /sys to unmute the sound?

I'm not sure which distro you're using, but debian puts them in: /etc/modules ..

The other way to work around it would be to statically link the alsa stuff into your kernel. I find that this is a much easier way to do things if you're not loading/unloading modules for individual cards ..
