Err.. yeah, I'm not quite sure why but a make oldconfig on my 2.6.5 config did not enable apic. Rather than boot 2.6.5 noapic, I enabled apic on 2.6.6 and the dmesg compares perfectly to the 2.6.5 one, right up until it tries to probe the 9th disk where it proceeds to dma timeout and then cease to listen to anything.. The attached patch, against kernel 2.6.5, updates libata to the code that is found in kernel 2.6.6. If this backported libata works for you in 2.6.5, we should be able to eliminate libata as a problem source. I'm finding that it's easier to screw up SATA cabling than PATA. It's more-convenient design is also less rugged. 2) is a PCI slot bad, or not busmastering like it should? have you tried moving the card to another PCI slot? 3) is it always the 9th port, regardless of the ordering of the PCI cards in PCI slots? I hadn't, but I have now :p) Under all these circumstances, 2.6.5 would boot fine. These tests were done with 2.6.5 and the patch you supplied me. I can even pull all the drives from boards 1&2 (drives 0-7) and it will lock hard on drive 8. If I pull the 3rd card then it all behaves perfectly no matter what I do to it. I have relocated the 3rd card in other slots to change the detection order and it always *seems* to die on the 3rd initialised card, no matter what slot. Strange, No? Ok, I have now reproduced this on another system. (New SATA cable and Drive) I took all three cards and plugged them into another system, as I don't have another 3 cards to spare! It is 100% reproducible if any drive is plugged into the last card to get initialised. I am testing it now with three cards and 1 SATA hard disk. If I plug the drive into any of the ports on the first 2 cards, it boots and all is happy. If a drive is plugged into the last card it locks on bootup as before. As before, a Vanilla 2.6.5 works perfectly. This is the same set of cards, however I have shuffled them around and into different slots to try and isolate the fault to a card. Unfortunately they all work perfectly under Vanilla 2.6.5 and it's always the last initialised card that causes the problem, no matter what slot/irq/physical card it is. I'm happy to do some more testing as I now have both systems in bits. Both machines are VIA KT600 chips, I have a Gigabyte GA-7VT600 and an ASUS A7V600. I have removed most of the other cards and have played with these Promise controllers in both of them. The problem follows the kernel. 2.6.5 works perfectly on both machines. 2.6.5 with the patch you sent me to update libata locks the same way on both machines. I have tried with acpi=off, noacpi, apic=off, noapic and all combinations of. The problem still persists. I have attached 3 serial console boot outputs, one where the drive was plugged into each card. Anything else I can do? It's an Asus A7V600 with 3 Promise SATA150-TX4 SATA cards. With 2.6.6 (and 2.6.6-bk3) it hangs with a dma timeout on boot detecting the 9th sata drive (there are 10). I left it for about 10 minutes to see if anything else transpired but it just sat there. I'm on a serial console to this machine at the moment and I could not get it to respond to the magic sysrq key over serial either. I have placed all relevant info including a capture of 2.6.5 boot and 2.6.6 boot, plus all requested info from linux/REPORTING-BUGS on my webpage Normal working dmesg http://www.wasp.net.au/~brad/2.6.5.log Hung up dmesg http://www.wasp.net.au/~brad/2.6.6.log .config and all other info I could gather. http://www.wasp.net.au/~brad/2.6.6.config Much as I'd love to be subscribed, I just can't keep up with the volume so please cc: me. Willing to try patches/hacks/suggestions Actually, while I'm here I just connected 2 sata drives to the onboard via sata ports and 2.6.5 won't detect them. All relevant info is in the logs. insmod sata_via just silently loads and nothing occurs. The onboard raid bios detects the drives fine and I have no raid created or enabled. First, for some reason ACPI in 2.6.6 decided to use PIC mode, while 2.6.5 used IOAPIC mode.
