Peter,

Now that the emu10k1's timer is supported, the following might be
relevant.

I found that the kX driver does not use this for PCM timing.  The timer
is only active when the kX mixer app is running, and the rate is always
480 which is 100Hz.

This leads me to believe that the timer is being used to update the VU
meters.  Does this sound reasonable?
