Subject: the RME situation
Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 00:30:26 -0500	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <1101619826.21427.30.camel@krustophenia.net> (raw)

So as you may know RME announced there will be no open source drivers
for their firewire products, due to (IMO valid) IP concerns. They are
certain to get a flood of hatemail from Linux users.

My suggestion was that someone on this list might want to be the voice
of reason and offer to write a closed source ALSA driver, under NDA, for
reasonable compensation of course. I can't see why they would say no,
unless they are already working on one.

Maybe if they set a precedent that the Linux audio community are not all
RMS worshipping zealots then we would have more supported hardware. I
think Nvidia proved that Linux users will get behind you if you have
superior hardware and quality drivers, even if they are binary only.
