I can't seem to build current alsa cvs on top of

I read a couple of old messages regarding this but found no solution (or
did not search long enough :-)

I think I had this problem, and it went away mysteriously. I can't
reproduce it now. Try a clean cvs checkout.

This was bug 605.
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=605
But the bug was closed.
I had a problem recently where "cvs update" did not seem to update my
tree to the latest version, I had to delete it and checkout again. I
chalked this up to user error but maybe there's something weird going
on.

Lucky you :-)

The checkout was clean (ie: on a newly created directory). I'm
installing the kernel on another of my test machines to do another clean
download and install.

Make sure that you have no alsa-driver/acore/memalloc.c after make
clean.

I'm very confused......
The build process works under an older kernel, but not the newer (using
cvscompile). I'm suspecting that somehow the version of the kernel is
not being detected correctly somewhere in the alsa code and then
something breaks while building.
Booting in the old kernel (a 2.6.8.1-U9.2 based kernel):
cvscompile works
cvscompile --with-kernel newer_kernel fails
Booting into the new kernel
cvscompile always fails no matter where I point it too
Does not make sense...

Not anymore. I believe this is a side effect of how I package and name
the kernels. Although I'm building 2.6.10-rc2-mm3-r0.7.32-14 the package
and kernel are still named 2.6.9 (because it is not yet 2.6.10), so the
version checking code in alsa assumes it is still 2.6.9 and configures
things incorrectly. I have yet to decide on a workaround.

Try to pass also --with-build=newer_kernel for 2.6.x kernel tree.
