The manual (a .doc file, ouch) says that the device is Audio Class
compliant, so it should work with the standard driver.
What is the problem?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
mano1979 - 03-02-05 12:34
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem is that i want to use my 5.1 speakerset and my sound driver
doesn't support that at this moment. I can't setup the speakers(volume per
speaker) and i have no downmix driver for 2 channelled audio to 5.1

Summary: CN-126 - USB 5.1 Audio adapter
Description:
I am in really need of a driver for this card. It needs to support 5.1
surround and speaker setup....... well like the original software.
Please let me know if you're able to make it.
Regards,
Armand Blaaker

It seems there was too much data to fit into your terminal. Please
redirect the output to file, like
lsusb -v > somefile
and paste the contents of the file here (or attach it).
And please show the contents of /proc/asound/cardX/stream0, too.

Summary: CN-126 - USB 5.1 Audio adapter
Description:
I am in really need of a driver for this card. It needs to support 5.1
surround and speaker setup....... well like the original software.
Please let me know if you're able to make it.

Armand Blaaker

Clemens Ladisch - 03-02-05 14:14
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This device has only one volume control for all six output channels.
Setting a seperate volume per speaker can only be done if it is emulated
in software. (ALSA has a softvol plugin, but currently it doesn't allow
one control for each channel, either.)
The device has two output formats: two channels and six channels. When
you play a stereo file, the device says "I can do this", and whatever
happens with these two channels is up to the device. Apparently, it
doesn't do upmixing.
To emulate upmixing in software, you can create a virtual stereo device
named "upmix" in your ~/.asoundrc:
pcm.upmix {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:0"
channels 6
}
ttable.0.0 1 # L -> front L
ttable.1.1 1 # R -> front R
ttable.0.2 0.5 # L -> center
ttable.1.2 0.5 # R -> center
ttable.0.3 0.5 # L -> LFE
ttable.1.3 0.5 # R -> LFE
ttable.0.4 1 # L -> surround L
ttable.1.5 1 # R -> surround R
}
The zero in "hw:0" is the card number, replace this with the actual card
number (see /proc/asound/cards).
Such a virtual device won't work with application that use the old OSS API
(/dev/dsp*).

I very gratefull for this info but i have no idea how to make an virtual
stereo device. are you able to make an Rpm file or something like that?

Create a file named .asoundrc in your home directory (or a file named
/etc/asound.conf if is hould be available for all users) and copy the
lines from
"pcm.umpix" to the last "}" into it.
The configure your applications to use device name "upmix" instead of
"default" or "hw:?".

[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 1482 bytes --]
My USB audio class device doesn't show all mixer controls in ALSA.
For reference, for other users searching this archive, it's a "Creative
USB Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External".
(http://creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=206&product=10702&nav=2)
I have added some inspection code to usb-mixer.c, which basically dumps
all class specific USB interface descriptors.
My card got 2 x OUTPUT_TERMINAL, 2 x INPUT_TERMINAL, 2 x FEATURE_UNIT
for the AudioControl class. But this doesn't make me any wiser.
I wonder why the snd_usb_create_mixer code does only loop over the
OUTPUT_TERMINAL class, even there is support code for all other types in
the parse_audio_unit code, which is called subsequently by
snd_usb_create_mixer.
My aim is to have controls available for the Line-in mixer, both for
recording and for direct re-mixing into the Main Out Plug.
Is there a developer owning such a box, or anyone who can guess what I'm
supposed to do with the additional AudioControl class controls?
Are there any tools that helps inspecting the USB device, or further
dumping of class-specific content and/or inspection of the USB
flow between a vmware hosted windows system and the linux host system?
Thanks,
What's the reason why Bug#995 is not available to the public? I'm
getting access denied. Otherwise I would have put this message into the
bugtracker.

Because some bug-reporters don't understand the public/private difference.
It's public now.

Because all other units are (indirectly) connected to an output
terminal. We get them when we recursively inspect the respective
source units.

Your device probably doesn't have such controls. What is the output
of "lsusb -v" for it?

I wonder what's the cause. Has Creative delivered a non-standard
compliant device one more time? The original EMU10K1 was also FUBAR wrt
to the PCI standard.
The kernel log is full of
Mar 3 16:17:01 ghanima kernel: usb 3-1: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd lsusb rqt 128 rq 6 len 979 ret -110
Mar 3 16:17:01 ghanima kernel: usb 3-1: lsusb timed out on ep0in
The device is connected to an UHCI hosted bus.. Linus' bitkeeper doesn't
show any relevant bug fixes in this area in the last few month.. Hmm any
ideas?

The kernel managed to read the descriptors, otherwise snd-usb-audio
wouldn't have loaded. You might try to install a newer version of
usbutils.
Well. What is the output of "xxd -g1 /proc/bus/usb/003/002" (where
003 and 002 are the bus and device numbers)?

I already did that (at least I thought) but obviously Gentoo hasn't
bumped the version from 0.11 to 0.70 yet.
Here is the lsusb (0.70) output. I removed the streaming interface

I presume lsusb has all the information, if not

Yes, and there's only one volume control for all channels.
> I wonder, how the audio signal flow looks like..
The bTerminalID/bUnitID field identifies each unit. Start at the
output terminals and go back through the bSourceID's.

Clemens

I really start to like USB.
That's how the Creative box should look internal.
Host -> [IT1] -> [FU2] -> [OT3] -> Speaker
Line-in -> [IT4] -> [FU5] -> [OT6] -> Host
That's _very_ minimal. It looks like there is no way to Route Line-In
back to Speaker. Just digitally and sampled.. bad. Don't buy that box.
The only thing nice is, that it's really 24-bit.
AudioStreaming Interface Descriptor:

bDescriptorType 36
bDescriptorSubtype 2 (FORMAT_TYPE)
bFormatType 1 (FORMAT_TYPE_I)
bNrChannels 4
bSubframeSize 3
bBitResolution 24

I guess you are referring to only being able to DMA into a 29 bit
address space?

Create a file named .asoundrc in your home directory (or a file named
/etc/asound.conf if is hould be available for all users) and copy the
lines from
"pcm.umpix" to the last "}" into it.
The configure your applications to use device name "upmix" instead of
"default" or "hw:?".
