You can use any headers the mailing list uses to filter the messages...

If your using gmail, just add your own label through a filter.

I like tags, but not for filtering... but because tag+subject makes it easy to scan your inbox and get context, specially for those of us who subscribe to many mailing lists

Or you could add a tag to the subject and we wouldn't have to add a
label. :)

Yes. We could. However maybe we want to rapidly identify the messages
and read them? It's not necessarily for filtering as much as it is for
identification.

IMHO tags are useful only if different topics are discussed into the
same mailing list and they need to be classified to ease readability
(e.g. different software version to test, different hardware platforms
it runs on, etc).
The suggestion was meant to simply classify the list itself to (I think)
filter messages, but the former writer could as simple as by subject,
filter by sender or mailing list name :)
Bye :)

Try filtering based on the List-Id header field. I subscribe to around
100 mailing lists, and have never found myself lacking of a tag in the
Subject field to properly sort them.

Good for you. However some of us do eye based filtering and want to
rapidly pick out messages.
Obviously people can filter on numerous headers. Try to adjust your
thinking a bit and realize that maybe just maybe we are intelligent and
know that, and don't want the tag for automated filtering but for visual
filtering?
It's amazing what happens when one stops and thinks before firing off a
knee jerk reaction. It's unfortunate that so many engineers take that
approach. *sighs*

if you let run all your emails into one INBOX and don't let your mail
server or mail client filter/tag for you, then you might wanna re-think
your method of working. Except you have to much spare time on your hand.
The tags are pretty bad when people have to CC multiple mailing list.
While cross-posting is not a good idea to begin with, in some cases it
can NOT be avoided. And I wanna have that working smoothly. So no tags
on this mailing list.
Regards
Marcel

Actually it works very well for me. :)
I get a couple hundred messages per day, and am still able to read all
of them, and respond to many. I also get a lot of work done.

Fair enough. :)
