Hello everyone :)I have a need to make my linux (gentoo) based wired router
as a wireless one. I would like to use kernel built-in drivers (ndisswrapper
is not my choice). So I'm going to buy this card:
http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProductDetail&localeCode=EN_USA&cid=9&scid=48&pid=1589
I would like to know if it will work with built-in drivers as HostAP or
should I search for a different card?
Thanks for you answers :)

If you check the Windows drivers for that card, you'll see that they are
for Atheros devices with PCI ID 168c:0023, which is supported by ath9k.

All cards supported by ath9k support AP mode.

So I bought this card, but which driver should I use? lspci -v output is:
02:04.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. Device ff1d (rev
01)
Subsystem: Atheros Communications Inc. Device ee1c
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 12
Memory at f2000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [40] #80 [0000]
Capabilities: [80] #00 [0000]
But neither modprobe ath5k or modprobe ath9k brings my interface up. I
compiled them into kernel as modules (also tried staticly). No luck.

My impression is that your card is incompatible with your motherboard.
I had a similar experience with D-Link DWA-552, which didn't work in any
modern system. I ended up sticking it into a G3 PowerMAC, where it
finally worked.

So what should I do now with it. How do I know if it's really incompatible?

Try other PCI slots. Try older machines. Try Windows.

Heh, the idea to change PCI slot helped. Now I have the correct output:lspci
-v:
02:0c.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5416 802.11abgn
Wireless PCI Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: Device 1976:200b
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 16
Memory at f2000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [40] #80 [0000]
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
Kernel modules: ath9k
So it's good news. I bought a good product. But now I have issues with
making it work in master mode. I use gentoo. My iwconfig looks like this:
wlan1 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=off
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
tunl0 no wireless extensions.
My /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf looks like this:
interface=wlan1
bridge=br0
# Driver interface type
(hostap/wired/madwifi/prism54/test/none/nl80211/bsd/hostap/none);
driver=nl80211
logger_syslog=-1

beacon_int=100
dtim_period=2
max_num_sta=255
rts_threshold=2347

own_ip_addr=127.0.0.1
wpa=bit1
wpa_passphrase=******
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK WPA-EAP
wpa_pairwise=TKIP CCMP
My /etc/conf.d/net like this:
mac_eth0="00:1D:60:86:5C:6D"
config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
dhcp_eth0=( "nodns nontp nonis" )
bridge_br0="eth1 eth2 eth3 wlan1"
config_br0=( "192.168.0.1 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0" )
config_eth1=( "null" )
config_eth2=( "null" )
config_eth3=( "null" )
config_wlan1=( "null" )
channel_wlan1="1"
mode_wlan1="master"
essid_wlan1="darwin"
modules_wlan1=( "!iwconfig" "!wpa_supplicant" )
When I reboot my PC internet won't work. I used rc-status and checked that
dhcpd is stopped. Then I start it, but then I need to restart named service.
And then internet works via wired interfaces, but wireless ouput is still
the same...

Finally, I managed to make the card work. But I need a bit of help more.There
is a command in madwifi-ng-tools "wlanconfig wlan1 destroy"
Is there something like that in ath9k? Because previous command gives me an
error: wlanconfig: ioctl: Operation not supported
Thanks for your answers ;)

The equivalent for ath9h and other mac80211 based drivers is:
iw dev wlan1 del
The homepage of iw is http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Documentation/iw
