Hi everybody,
I follow this list a little, and have read that I have to apply some patches to
the kernel in order to create snapshots with a reiserfs.
Now my question:
Could somebody send me some kind of HOWTO to update my kernel as as given by
SuSe 7.3 (they always apply some patches to the kernel). Since I have applied
kernel patches in earlier times (kernel 0.9x) and compilation quite often, I do
not need a kernel-compilation HOWTO, but one which specifies which patches do I
need (for a SuSe 7.3-SMP-kernel!), in which order should they applied, where do
I get them etc.
Thanks in advance, and sorry for asking for a HOWTO, reading the list more
closely whould help too (I think) but my business (as a freelance) is to write
compilers, parsers etc....
With best regards
Jürgen

I believe, if you check, that SuSE already has applied thispatch for you. If LVM
snapshot fails with Reiser, then you should send an email to the SuSE list, as
they would want to know that they left it out.

Correct, the suse kernel supports lvm snapshots on reiserfs out of the box.
I'd advise grabbing the suse kernel update, as it fixes a few security
problems and updates things to 2.4.16 (+ most patches in 2.4.17).

(may be a silly question) where do I find that kernel sources??

IIRC ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/
You just need to get the kernel RPMS and apply
eg.
rpm -Uvh k_deflt-2.4.16-22.i386.rpm
mk_initrd && lilo
reboot and that's it.

[ Holger probably knows this, just a general reply ;-) ]
This gives you the latest update kernel for the 7.3 distro. It has been
through many tests, and is considered an official release. This is the one
to download if you want something stable.

> ftp://ftp.suse.com:/pub/people/mantel/next/
This gives you the latest beta kernel. These tend to track the pre
releases closely, and are not as well tested as the update kernels. This
is the one to download if you want the bleeding edge.

Thank's! Snapshots and reiserfs and SuSe 7.3 work fine now.
