Summary: midi/joystick port disabled and no way to enable it
Description:
I have a MIDI keyboard and I'd like to connect it to the midi/joystick port
of the soundcard.
Unfortunately, while PCM works fine and /dev/midi is created, I see no
MIDI communication through /dev/midi.
/proc/asound/AudioPCI/audiopci reports that the joystick port is
disabled.
It is probably a bug on the Ubuntu side (did they forget to compile the
driver correctly?), but I'd like to see a parameter for enabling the
joystick port "on the fly": other drivers have one (e.g.: "joystick=1"),
but snd_ens1371 has not, so:
1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

It seem that your have 3 ALSA cards
Do you enable PNP is BIOS ?
Please post the output of
cat /proc/asound/cards
cat /proc/asound/version

Hi,
my BIOS enables PnP by default: at least, that's what I suppose, since
there's no PnP option,
these are the output you requested:
root@ubuntu:/home/marco# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [AudioPCI ]: ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI
Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0xd400, irq 18
1 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237
VIA 8237 with CMI9761 at 0xbc00, irq 22
2 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
MPU-401 UART at 0x330, irq 5
root@ubuntu:/home/marco# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.9 (Sun May 29

As I understand it, the midi connections are unlikely to be brought out on
the gameport of your connector cable (your b(i)). Refer to midi org web
site, the 5-pin DIN midi connectors should have opto-isolators built in to
the cable connectors driving as a 'current loop', which makes it
unsuitable for splitting.
Does the keyboard have midi-thro'? If so connect midi out DIN plug to
keyboard midi in, and midi in plug to midi thro -then the signal should
loop back. Try it both ways round as some cables have the plugs labelled
for which they should connect to, rather than which they come from.
Hope this might help.

Unfortunately my keyboard does not have midi-thru.
I will experiment with some friend's MIDI cables. :)
Thanks all,

Some additional considerations:
My MIDI cable was built this way:
(a) a 15-pins port on the pc side;
(b) (i) another 15-pins port and (ii) 2 5-pins ports on the keyboard
side.
1) As I told before, connecting pins 15 and 12 of the card gameport (a)
actually worked! It seems that the driver was ok. My apologies to the
whole ALSA team for the waste of time.
2) Instead, connecting pins 15 and 12 of (b-i) and typing the same "amidi"
commands returns in random characters displayed in the console. Shouldn't
I see the same results as in point 1)? Does it mean that I have some cable
problems?
Thanks,
MZ

I've connected pins 12 and 15 of the gameport and I typed the same "amidi"

second terminal window! So the gameport looks like working... :)
So the problem lies in the MIDI cable?

1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

With "output" and "input", I meant the MIDI jacks of your gameport-MIDI
adapter.
If it has built in cables, you cannot connect one to the other.
In this case, you can just connect pins 12 and 15 of the gameport with a
wire (view with a monospaced font):

Your amidi commands should work _if_ the output is connected to the input.

zanonmark - 05-25-06 18:33
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've connected pins 12 and 15 of the gameport and I typed the same "amidi"
commands as before, this time I was able to see the correct result on the
second terminal window! So the gameport looks like working... :)
So the problem lies in the MIDI cable?
Thanks, MZ

Excuse me, I didn't understand: how can I connect the sound card's output
with its input? the 15-pins jack would "use" the whole port,
also, I don't know whether this makes sense, but i tried:
amidi -d -p hw:0
on one console, and:
amidi -p hw:0 -S "F0 43 10 4C 00 00 7E 00 F7"
on another console, and I could not see anything in the first one:
shouldn't I see the dump of those characters?
Thanks for your patience :)

To check whether the cable itself works, connect the sound card's MIDI
output to its MIDI input, run "amidi -d -p hw:0", then play something to

do you mean it could be a keyboard communication problem?
I remember using the same keyboard (roland em-25) with Windows98 and a
MIDI software (Anvil Studio trial) with no configuration problems, but I
don't have Windows98 here anymore so I cannot repeat the test.
Is there any MIDI initialization string I have to send to the keyboard?
Thanks,
MZ

but snd_ens1371 has not, so:
1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

arecordmidi will allow you to record your play on keyboard to a midi file.
You will need Timidity++ or softsynth if you want to hear the playback.
However it seem that there is no communication between midi keyboard and
ens1371.

zanonmark - 05-23-06 11:26
----------------------------------------------------------------------
do you mean it could be a keyboard communication problem?
I remember using the same keyboard (roland em-25) with Windows98 and a
MIDI software (Anvil Studio trial) with no configuration problems, but I
don't have Windows98 here anymore so I cannot repeat the test.
Is there any MIDI initialization string I have to send to the keyboard?
Thanks,
MZ

Summary: midi/joystick port disabled and no way to enable it
Description:
I have a MIDI keyboard and I'd like to connect it to the midi/joystick port
of the soundcard.
Unfortunately, while PCM works fine and /dev/midi is created, I see no
MIDI communication through /dev/midi.
/proc/asound/AudioPCI/audiopci reports that the joystick port is
disabled.
It is probably a bug on the Ubuntu side (did they forget to compile the

1) Unfortunately, playing doesn't show up anything but:
root@ubuntu:/home/marco# amidi -d -p hw:0,0
[pressing CTRL+C]
0 bytes read
2) As per the OSS driver, how can I test it?
I just unloaded (rmmod) snd_ens1371 and loaded (modprobe) es1371. I can
hear xmms playing pcm sounds, but how can i test midi?
"cat /dev/midi" and playing doesn't show up anything.
Thanks,
MZ

1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

If you are not intend to use the onboard midi, you may need to disable it
in BIOS setup
BTW, what is the model of your ens1371 ? lspci -vvn

of course I could disable it, but my intention is to try to make it usable
someday :) I'd just like to buy a midi replicator when I have some time...

my mobo is an Asrock k7vt4a-pro, which has a mpu401 uart onboard (but I
can't use it because I miss a midi/joystick cable going from the onboard
controller to the back of the case), and I also have this snd-ens1371
compatible pci card which should work with midi as well... :)

It is probably a bug on the Ubuntu side (did they forget to compile the

joystick port "on the fly": other drivers have one (e.g.: "joystick=1"),
but snd_ens1371 has not, so:
1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

BTW, what is the model of your motherobard ?
It seem that you have a mpu401_uart on your motherboard
----------------------------------------------------------------------
zanonmark - 04-26-06 19:51
----------------------------------------------------------------------
my mobo is an Asrock k7vt4a-pro, which has a mpu401 uart onboard (but I
can't use it because I miss a midi/joystick cable going from the onboard
controller to the back of the case), and I also have this snd-ens1371
compatible pci card which should work with midi as well... :)
thanks,
MZ

1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

Hi,
my BIOS enables PnP by default: at least, that's what I suppose, since
there's no PnP option,
these are the output you requested:
root@ubuntu:/home/marco# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [AudioPCI ]: ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI
Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0xd400, irq 18
1 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237
VIA 8237 with CMI9761 at 0xbc00, irq 22
2 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
MPU-401 UART at 0x330, irq 5
root@ubuntu:/home/marco# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.9 (Sun May 29

I'm sorry Raymond I didn't understand your last note,
actually, you're right: I don't need any joystick module because I'm not
going to use any joystick, but only the MIDI input/output functionality of
the card,
but I still can't understand why this kind of i/o is disabled by default,
and how I can enable it, provided that snd_ens1371 and gameport are
already loaded,
well, I don't understand if there's something I can do, or if it is a bug
and I have to wait for a debugged version... :)
Thanks a lot,
Marco

1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

I don't have this card, this mean that SUPPORT_JOYSTICK is not defined
#if defined(CONFIG_GAMEPORT) || (defined(MODULE) &&
defined(CONFIG_GAMEPORT_MODULE))
#define SUPPORT_JOYSTICK
#endif
snd_iprintf(buffer, "Joystick enable : %s\n",

You do not need to enable the joystick port; the MIDI functionality of the
game port is completely independent from that.
You do not need snd-mpu401, it's only used for mainboard game ports and
for separate MPU-401-compatible cards. The ENS1371 chip is not MPU-401
compatible.
The MIDI port is always enabled, and should work.
What is the output of "amidi -l"?

It seem that joystick is not working on ens1371
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1774
Could you try 0x218 ?
Do your joystick require specific module ? (joydev, analog, gameport)
Are those io ports already used by other hardware ?

1) it is not possible to reload (rmmod and modprobe) the driver with that
parameter enabling the midi/joystick port manually,
2) it is not possible to save (alsactl store), modify and reload (alsactl
restore) the soundcard settings, because I see no such parameter to
modify.
So, will you please include such a parameter in the next version of the
driver?
Thanks a lot,
Marco.

Say Y here to include support for Ensoniq AudioPCI ES1371 chips and
Sound Blaster PCI 64 or 128 soundcards.
To compile this driver as a module, choose M here: the module
will be called snd-ens1371.
