one based on the ov511 chipset, like the Creative Web Cam 3, look here:

http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511

ooops, it seems to be unreachable here, so look at
Documentation/usb/ov511.txt

I really hate to ask on the list, but if I was to buy a usb web cam, what
would be a good choice?

I would have tried linux-usb, but I didn't know where it was, sorry.

The ov511-based cameras seem to work really nicely.

(this is a cheap chip, used in lots of different cameras)

And while we're on the topic of webcams:

Try a fresh new kernel, at least 2.2.18 or any 19-preX. They include usb
right 'out of the box'.

I don't know that particular camera ... but as a general matter, you want
to find a kernel driver that can access it. That in turn is pretty mch a
function of its internal chipset ... in practice, when I was trying to get
a Webcam working, I just tried all the "USB Multimedia Devices" choices
until I found one that worked.

If you're using a precompiled kernel, see if they are included. If you're
compiling your own, look in (with "make menuconfig") the

         USB Support
                 USB Multimedia Devices

list.

Once you have the camera module working, you can use gqcam to try it out.
There are probably other apps too, but I'm not really up to speed on this
stuff any longer. A quick search (in the Debian package list under
"webcam") turned up these names, but I can't tell you anything about them
other than what's here:

came - Rewrite of the xawtv webcam app using imlib2
camstream - collection of tools for webcams and other video-devices
cqcam - Color QuickCam (PC/Parallel) control program
feh - imlib2 based image viewer
gkrellkam - GKrellM plugin that displays a periodically updating image
gqcam - GTK Webcam control
motion - V4L Capture Program supporting Movement Detection
vgrabbj - grabs a image from a camera and puts it in jpg/png format
webcam - capture and upload images
webcamd - Capture images from video devices

There were several models of this camera, IIRC. If your's is CT6840,
then it's like mine. At the kernel level, I have Video4Linux and USB
OV511 options built as *modules* (not built into the kernel,it doesn't
work that way for me). At boottime,in my modules.autoload, I specify
ov511, which autoloads the camera module and the dependency, videodev.
Once those are in place, you should be able to use any reasonable V4L
client to do captures, either motion or still.
